Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bridgewater College's
softball team led the host Guilford Quakers (12-3-1, 2-0 ODAC)
through three innings in both games but couldn't hold the Quakers
off late as the squad dropped a twinbill in Greensboro, N.C.
Bridgewater (8-4, 0-2 ODAC) lost game one 3-2 before falling in the
nightcap by a 6-4 score.
After being shut down in order in the first inning of game one,
the Eagles got on the board in the second when junior Lauren
Childress put a ball over the left field fence to give BC a 1-0
advantage through two.
Freshman Heather Jenkins mowed through the Quakers lineup in
order to keep the game at a low-scoring affair until the freshman
aided her own cause with a two-out single to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Jenkins remained perfect through the bottom of the fifth until a
lead-off homerun from the Quakers brought the game to a 2-1 tally.
Guilford knotted the game up later in the inning off of a single
to Jenkins before taking the lead off of a groundout with one away
in the sixth.
Bridgewater applied some pressure in the seventh with a leadoff
single and a sacrifice bunt to place Kristen Combs at second with
one away, but the Eagles would strike out and fly out to end the
ball game, giving Guilford a 3-2 victory.
Jenkins and Childress were each 1-for-3 with a run driven in
while designated player Emily Morris was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jenkins had a perfect game brewing through five innings before
allowing three runs to record the loss. The freshman allowed the
three runs on four hits while striking out a trio of Quakers
batters.
Charissa Duncan led the way for the Quakers at the plate with a
1-for-2 outing with her lone hit coming in the sixth off of a
lead-off homer.
Bowser picked up the win, allowing two runs across seven innings
of work while striking out four.
Game two saw the Eagles tally a run in each of the first three
innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead after three frames.
Bridgewater got on the board in the first when a Cassie Thompson
sacrifice fly to left field plated shortstop Hillary Rees to put
the Eagles up 1-0.
In the top of the second, Bridgewater added to its lead when a
Sarah Heretick blast to center field put the Eagles ahead by a 2-0
tally.
Childress added another insurance run for the Eagles in the
third when her single through the left side scored Rees to give BC
a 3-0 advantage.
Guilford answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of
runs off of a single to right center to cut Bridgewater's lead
to 3-2.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Eagles added an
additional run when a double from freshman Aven Thomas rounded
Combs from second to put Bridgewater up 4-2.
Guilford immediately responded in the home half of the sixth
with four runs off of five hits to take the lead at a 6-4 tally,
which is where the game would end as the Eagles left the bases
loaded in the top of the seventh.
Senior Ashley Gills tossed three no-hit innings for the Eagles
before being replaced in the fourth by Lindsay Lam. Lam recorded
the loss, allowing four runs on six hits.
At the plate, Combs led the way with a 2-for-2 game, while
Childress chipped in a 2-for-4 outing with a double and a RBI.
Bowser picked up the win in relief in game two, tossing 4.2
innings of work, allowing one run off of five Bridgewater hits.
The losses snapped an eight game winning streak for the Eagles,
while the Quaker sweep marked the first time Guilford has defeated
BC.
Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday, March 17 when the
squad hosts Randolph in the home-conference opener. The opening
pitch against the WildCats is slated for 3:00 p.m.
