Offensive Outpouring Leads Softball to Doubleheader Sweep at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – In a crosstown clash with the Royals of Eastern Mennonite, the Bridgewater Eagles (12-4, 4-2 ODAC) offense blasted three balls out of the yard and pounded out 24 combined hits to sweep the Royals in softball action at Gehman Field. BC won game one by a 9-4 score before shutting EMU out in the nightcap by a 9-0 tally.

Game one was a pitcher's duel at the onset before Bridgewater tagged a pair of runs on the Royals in the third inning after two EMU miscues.

Eastern Mennonite (7-6, 0-2 ODAC) quickly knotted the game up, tacking on two runs of their own in the home half of the frame to tie the score at two runs apiece after three innings of play.

Neither team plated a run in the fourth before the Eagles exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to blow the game wide open.

Emily Morris got the scoring started in the third when her single to drove in freshman Aven Thomas to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Bridgewater then placed runners at second and third off a Lauren Childress double before Angela Spinelli smashed a ball over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead.

Junior Leah Cossentino rounded out the scoring for the Eagles in the fifth when her single to center field plated left fielder Kristen Combs to put the Eagles ahead 7-2.

Bridgewater tacked on two more runs in the sixth off of another Spinelli homer before allowing a pair of EMU runs in the seven, but it was too little, too late for the Royals as the Eagles took a 9-4 victory in game one.

Spinelli led the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 game. The junior tallied six RBI to go along with two runs scored off of a pair of homers to lead the Eagles potent offense.

For BC, the two through five hitters were a combined 7-of-15 from the plate with seven RBI, seven runs scored and a walk.

In the circle, senior Ashley Gills (5-1) picked up the victory. Gills tossed 6 and 1/3 innings of work allowing four Royals runs off of seven hits while striking out six.

For EMU, Courtney Allman's 2-for-4 game led the way. Allman also tallied two RBI.

Eastern Mennonite ace Lisa Lee picked up the loss, tossing six innings of action, allowing nine runs off of 11 BC hits.

Game two saw more of the same for BC at the plate, while freshman Heather Jenkins remained nearly unhittable in the circle.

After a scoreless first inning, Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when a Spinelli double to left center drove in Childress from first base.

Bridgewater continued to pour it on in the third when a Morris double to right center drove in Thomas and second baseman Hillary Rees. The Eagles rounded out their third inning scoring when a Childress single brought in Morris from third to give BC a 4-0 advantage.

Freshman Heather Jenkins continued to mow down the Royals lineup through three innings of play before the Eagles gave the newcomer another insurance run in the fourth. Morris tagged her second double of the game, this time to left field, to score Leah Cossentino giving BC a 5-0 lead.

The two teams remained scoreless in the fifth, but Bridgewater extended its lead in the sixth when Morris plated her fourth and final runner of the game with a single, again rounding Cossentino, to put the Eagles up 6-0.

Bridgewater rounded out its scoring in the seventh with three runs.

Combs got the scoring started when she swiped home plate to put the Eagles ahead 7-0. Thomas then rounded out the scoring with a two-run blast to put the Eagles ahead at a 9-0 final.

Morris led the way for the Eagles in game two with a 3-for-4 outing. Morris drove in four runs on the game and scored another to lead the Eagles offense.

In the circle, Jenkins (4-1) was lights out for Bridgewater allowing only three EMU hits and only two Royal runners to get into scoring position. The freshman has now tossed back-to-back shutouts.

EMU was led at the plate by a trio of players with three hits.

Nicole Wade picked up the loss for the Royals, allowing four Bridgewater runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of action.

BC has now won four games in a row and 12 of its last 14.

Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the squad travels to Greensboro. Saturday's game was originally slated for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. but has been changed due to thunderstorms in the forecast for the Tarheel State. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 2:00 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
