Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater (15-4) fell
behind early before plating a run in every inning as the Eagles
softball team defeated visiting Mary Washington by a 9-1 score in
five innings. Game two was called after half of an inning due to
rain.
Mary Washington (5-15-1) took advantage of a pair of Bridgewater
errors in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead
over the Eagles.
Bridgewater quickly responded in the home half of the frame when
a Kristen Combs walk with the bases loaded drove in sophomore
Hillary Rees to knot the game up at one each.
After being rattled in the first, the Eagles defense settled
down in the second to hold the contest at a 1-1 tally.
In the home half of the second, Bridgewater took the lead when
an Aven Thomas double to right field plated Leah Cossentino and
Rees to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
Mary Washington had no answer for BC starter Ashley Gills in the
third as the senior settled down and held the visiting Eagles off
of the scoreboard.
BC extended its lead in the bottom of the third when a
Cossentino single up the middle drove in pinch runner Christy
Barron to put the Eagles up 4-1.
In the fourth, Mary Washington's offense came alive with
two outs as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases. Gills
worked her way out of the bases loaded jam, forcing a ground out to
keep the game at a 4-1 score.
The Eagles blew the game wide open in the home half of the
fourth tallying three runs off of three hits to make the score 7-1.
Bridgewater opened the inning with a pair of outs before the
Eagles used some two-out magic of their own.
Combs got things started when she was hit by a pitch and then
put into scoring position off of a Sarah Heretick single up the
middle.
With runners at first and second, freshman Amber Marstin tagged
a single to left field to plate Combs and push the Eagles lead to
5-1.
With runners at first and third, Cossentino continued her
stellar day at the plate with a bases clearing triple which scored
Rutledge and fellow pinch runner Ariel Stewart to build BC's
lead to 7-1.
Gills continued to mow through Mary Washington batters in the
fifth before the Eagles put the game away in the bottom of the
inning.
Bridgewater opened the inning with back-to-back singles from
Cassie Thompson and Emily Morris before a wild pitch put the two
base runners in scoring position.
Thompson then scored off of a wild pitch right before a Lauren
Childress double plated Morris to end the ball game, giving the
Eagles a 9-1 win in five innings.
At the plate, Cossentino and Morris led the way as the pair each
went 2-for-3 at the plate. Cossentino tallied three RBI and a
triple to go along with a stolen base to aid the Eagles cause while
Morris scored once and was walked once.
Gills (6-1) picked up the win for Bridgewater. The senior tossed
five innings of work allowing one unearned run off of five hits.
Mary Washington was led at the plate by designated player Krissy
Leber. Leber was 1-for-1 at the plate with a walk.
Eagles starter Annie Blaine (2-6) got the loss. Blaine tossed
one complete inning of work before being relieved after a walk to
open the second. Reliever Danielle Cunetta tossed three innings of
relief for Mary Washington, allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Game two saw a driving rain storm play into the hands of Mary
Washington early as Bridgewater's defense booted three balls
before allowing four Eagles runs to score.
Following the top of the first inning, the rain became too much
as the umpires decided to call the game with less than one inning
in the books.
Bridgewater has now won seven games in a row including six
straight conference victories.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday when the squad travels
to Roanoke.
