WESTMINSTER, Md. - In the team's regular season
road finale, the Bridgewater Eagles (29-8) softball team belted
three homers in the seventh inning of game one to pull away late in
an 18-3 victory over McDaniel (12-20). BC blasted two more homers
in game two en route to a 8-2 win and a doubleheader sweep over the
Green Terror.
With the sweep, the Eagles extend their season-best winning
streak to 11 games.
Bridgewater kicked off the first game with a scoring barrage in
the first inning, which was capped off by Melanie Lamb's two-run
shot to center field.
Following a leadoff groundout from the bat of Hillary Rees, the
Eagles tallied back-to-back singles before an Angela Spinelli
double opened the scoring, plating Leah
Cossentino to and Emily Morris to put
BC ahead 2-0.
Freshman Aven
Thomas followed the Spinelli double with a RBI single to center
which scored Spinelli and extended the lead to 3-0 before Lamb's
two-run blast ended the scoring in the first with the Eagles ahead
5-0.
Both teams were held off of the scoreboard through the next two
innings until the Eagles extended their lead with a three-run
fourth.
BC knocked in its first run of the frame when a Lauren
Childress sacrifice fly drove in Cossentino, giving the Eagles
a 6-0 advantage.
Spinelli ended the scoring for Bridgewater in the fourth with a
two-run homer to left center field to push the Eagles lead to
8-0.
Bridgewater extended its lead in the fifth with another run off
a pinch-hit-RBI single from Ann Komara, but the
Green Terror wouldn't go down without a fight, as they tallied two
runs to push the game to the sixth inning.
The two teams traded a run apiece in the sixth to put the game
at a 10-3 score until the Eagles tallied an eight-run seventh
inning to blow the game wide open.
Bridgewater blasted three homeruns in the seventh, including
Lamb's second of the game to push the game to an 18-3 tally which
is where the game would end. Lamb, Morris and Heather Jenkins
each went deep for the Eagles in the inning.
Morris' 4-for-5 game at the plate lead the way for BC, while
Cossentino notched a 3-for-3 game and Spinelli turned in a 3-for-4
performance. Morris and Lamb each posted four RBI a piece, while
Cossentino and Spinelli each notched three-RBI games.
Sophomore Summer Ramsey
picked up the win for Bridgewater. Ramsey (5-0) went the distance,
allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four.
McDaniel was led at the plate by Beth Ann Fusco's 2-for-3
outing.
Ashley Meister picked up the loss for the Green Terror, allowing
nine runs on 13 Bridgewater hits.
Bridgewater opened game two with another onslaught of homers
with Morris and Childress belting back-to-back blasts in the first
to put BC ahead 3-0 after one.
The Eagles extended their lead in the second when a Jenkins
double plated Leigh
Lam to put BC ahead 4-0.
McDaniel responded with two runs in the third to cut the Eagles
lead in half at a 4-2 tally.
Bridgewater built its lead back to three runs when a Cossentino
double scored junior Kristen
Combs to put the Eagles ahead 5-2 after four innings.
Jenkins extended the Eagles lead in the fifth when her single to
right scored Thomas to push the BC lead to 6-2 before a Rees double
drove in freshman Leigh Lam and Jenkins to push the lead to 8-2
which is where the game would end, giving the Eagles the
doubleheader sweep.
At the plate, Jenkins led the way with a 3-for-4 game. The
freshman drove in two runs and scored once to pace the Eagles
offense which tallied 35 hits on the day.
Becky
Schmidt (2-0) picked up the win for BC, going the distance
allowing a pair of unearned runs on five hits.
McDaniel was led at the plate by Ashley Crawford's 2-for-3
game.
Erinne Warrenfeltz picked up the loss for the Green
Terror.
With a hit in both games, Rees extended her season-best hitting
streak to 11 consecutive games. Spinelli extended her career-best
hitting streak to nine games with a hit in both games.
Childress saw her career-best on-base streak come to an end at
25 games as the junior didn't tally a hit in game one of the
twinbill.
On the week, Bridgewater hit 18 homeruns in eight games
played.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it plays host to
NAIA foe Southern Virginia in the regular season home finale.
Tuesday's opening pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the BC Softball
Field.
