BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In a Good Friday
doubleheader at the BC Softball Field, the Bridgewater Eagles
(16-7, 5-5 ODAC) offense was only able to manufacture one run in 14
innings as the Eagles dropped an ODAC twinbill to the Virginia
Wesleyan Marlins (16-7, 7-5 ODAC) by 1-0 and 4-1 scores.
Game one saw a pitcher's duel between the two teams as BC
senior Ashley Gills and Marlins hurler Brittaney Brown both posted
shutouts through six innings.
Following six scoreless frames, the Marlins bats tallied
back-to-back hits in the seventh to score Chelsea Henline and take
a 1-0 lead.
Bridgewater had the final at-bat but went down 1-2-3 to pick up
the 1-0 loss.
At the plate, Lauren Childress lead an anemic Bridgewater
offense with a 1-for-2 game. BC tallied a meager three hits in the
loss.
Gills (7-2) picked up the loss from Bridgewater. The senior
hurler tossed seven innings of four hit ball, allowing one run and
striking out a season-best 10 batters.
Brown picked up the victory for the Marlins. The senior tossed a
complete game, allowing three Bridgewater hits and striking out
nine.
Game two saw the Marlins jump out to a 2-1 lead after the first
two frames.
BC finally got on the scoreboard in the second inning of game
two when a Leah Cossentino single plated pinch runner Christy
Barron to cut the Marlins lead to 2-1.
Bridgewater had a multitude of opportunities but couldn't
score another run while the Marlins plated a run each in the fifth
and seventh innings to defeat the Eagles by a 4-1 score.
At the plate, Cossentino's 2-for-3 outing led the way for
Bridgewater, with the junior driving in the lone run of the day.
Freshman Melanie Lamb also chipped in a 2-for-2 outing.
In the circle, senior Lindsay Lam picked up the loss. Lam went
the distance allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out one.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by a 2-for-4 game from second baseman
Kristy White.
Freshman pitcher Christina Crawford picked up the win. Crawford
tossed the first four innings, allowing one Bridgewater run on
seven hits. The freshman was replaced in the fifth by Brown who
tossed the final three innings to pick up the save after earning
the victory in game one.
With a base hit in both games, Childress extended her hitting
streak to six games.
Bridgewater is back in action on Monday when York (Pa.) comes to
BC. The opening pitch on Monday is slated for 2:00 p.m.
