SALEM, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles
softball team took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but a
run in each of the final two innings from the Virginia Wesleyan
Marlins put an end to BC's season as the Eagles fell by a 3-2
tally.
Virginia Wesleyan plated a run in the bottom of the first to
take an early 1-0 lead before both pitchers took over the game,
keeping the score at a slim 1-0 gap through six innings.
In the top of the sixth, a Hillary Rees single
to centerfield drove in junior Kristen
Combs and gave the Eagles bats some life while tying the game
up at 1-1.
Bridgewater took the lead when Angela Spinelli
drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded, bringing in Rees and
giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
Virginia Wesleyan quickly responded with a run of its own in the
bottom of the sixth, tying the game at 2-2 heading into the final
frame.
Bridgewater's bats were held silent in the seventh, while the
Marlins used an Eagles miscue to kick off the bottom of the inning.
Virginia Wesleyan loaded the bases off of a hit by pitch and a
fielder's choice following a wild pitch on the third strike, before
reliever Ashley Gills walked in the winning run, ending the Eagles
season.
At the plate, Rees led the way with a 2-for-4 outing, including
a RBI and run scored.
Gills picked up the loss for the Eagles. The senior tossed the
final two outs of the game, and allowed the winning run while
walking two and striking out two.
BC's starter Lindsay Lam gave up
a run early but held the Marlins in check until midway through the
sixth. Lam tossed five and a third innings of work, allowing two
runs on three hits while striking out six.
At the plate for the Marlins, Briana Bertovich's 1-for-3 game
led the way. Bertovich drove in two runs as well. .
Virginia Wesleyan hurler Brittaney Brown went the distance,
allowing two runs on four hits and striking out nine.
Gills and Lam end their Bridgewater careers as two of the top
pitchers in school history. Gills leaves as the career strikeouts
leader with 344, while also becoming the all-time leader in
opponent batting average after allowing opponents to hit at a
paltry .178 in her four years with the Eagles. The senior's 8.15
strikeouts per seven innings on the season is tops in school
history.
Lam leaves with the sixth most wins in school history with 34
and the fourth highest strikeouts total in with 245.
On the year, the Eagles posted the eighth-best team batting
average in program history to go along with the second most doubles
and long balls. BC also chalked up the highest fielding percentage
in program history at a .965 clip (41 errors in 813
attempts).
Bridgewater ends the season with a 33-10 record for its fourth
30-win season in the last five years.
