LYNCHBURG, Va. – Bridgewater College
(19-8, 6-6 ODAC)handed Lynchburg its first conference loss of the
season in a ODAC softball doubleheader split at Moon Field.
Lynchburg (19-9, 9-21 ODAC) took game one by a 5-0 score before
Bridgewater blasted three balls out of the yard in game two in a
8-0 win.
Lynchburg used three homeruns in three innings en route to a 5-0
victory in game number one over the Eagles.
Bridgewater knocked on the door in the second inning when a Drew
Rutledge double put the junior in scoring position.
Rutledge advanced to third base off of a wild pitch before the
Eagles were retired in the second.
Lynchburg put the first run of the game on the board when a
homerun to centerfield put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
Following a scoreless third for the Eagles, the Hornets tallied
three more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-0 lead after
three innings of action.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lynchburg hit its third long ball
of the day to build a 5-0 lead.
Both teams remained scoreless through the final three frames as
the Eagles dropped game one by a 5-0 score.
At the plate, a trio of Eagles had a hit apiece. Junior Angela
Spinelli and Rutledge both recorded a double while teammate Lauren
Childress tallied a single.
In the circle, senior Ashley Gills (7-3) picked up the loss.
Gills went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing all five runs before being
replaced by freshman Heather Jenkins who recorded the final out of
the inning for the Eagles.
Lynchburg was led at the plate by Lauren Duguay's 2-for-3
outing. Three Hornet hitters hit a homerun in the first game.
Junior Katie Bruce (11-5) recorded the win for the Hornets.
Bruce went the distance, allowing three BC hits and no Eagles runs.
The tide turned at the onset of game two as the Eagles smashed
two homers out of the yard in the first two innings to build an
early lead.
Bridgewater loaded the bases with one out in the first
before a Spinelli grand slam cleared the bases to put the Eagles
ahead 4-0. The grand slam for Spinelli was the first of the season.
Game two starter Lindsay Lam shut the Hornets down in the home
half of the first, before the Eagles offense gave Lam more
insurance runs in the top of the second.
Freshman Aven Thomas led off the second with a solo shot to left
field to put the Eagles ahead 5-0. Thomas' second inning
blast was the second of her career.
Lam continued to roll through three innings of work, holding the
Hornet bats in check before the Eagles tacked another run on the
board in the fourth
Bridgewater plated one more run in the fourth when an Emily
Morris single drove in Heather Jenkins to put BC ahead 6-0 after
four innings of action.
The home run barrage continued for Bridgewater when a Melanie
Lamb blast over the left field fence put the Eagles ahead 7-0.
After Lam continued to baffle the Lynchburg batter in the bottom
of the fifth, BC plated another insurance run in the sixth to put
the Eagles ahead 8-0.
Sophomore Hillary Rees reached on a single to left before
swiping second base to put a runner in scoring position with two
outs.
Cossentino followed Rees' base hit with a double to the
left field gap to score Rees and put the Eagles ahead 8-0 which is
where the game would end due to the eight-run rule.
Bridgewater was led at the plate by Cossentino's 3-for-4
outing at the plate. The Glenelg, Md. Native plated a run and
scored once to lead BC's power-hitting offense in game two.
Lam (3-3) picked up the win for the Eagles. The senior tossed a
two-hit shutout to earn the victory while stirking out nine Hornet
batters.
Childress saw her hitting streak come to a close in game two but
has reached base safely in 17 straight games for the Eagles dating
back to March 11 following a walk in game two.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday when the Eagles host
Emory & Henry for Senior Day. The opening pitch on Sunday is
slated for 2:00 p.m.
