Bateman Goal Lifts Field Hockey to 2-1 Victory over #20 St. Mary's

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sophomore Jennifer Bateman (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) pulled back and fired a rocket into the back of the cage at the 11:09 mark of the first overtime session to propel the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team to a hard fought 2-1 victory over No. 20 St. Mary's (Md.) in non-conference action at Mapp Field.

Following a scoreless first frame, Bridgewater struck first when Brianna Jacques (Orange, Va./Orange) scored off of a corner insert to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Junior Megan Bach (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) and sophomore Joan Burleson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) tallied assists on the goal.

St. Mary's, which entered the game ranked 20th according to womensfieldhockey.com, applied fierce pressure to the Eagles following the goal, before Blair Lusby netted the equalizer at the 51:22 mark to tie the score at one all. The Seahawks goal was tallied during an 11-on-10 situation, due to a yellow card on Bateman.

Both teams had scoring opportunities during the final 18-plus minutes of regulation, but neither team could capitalize, forcing the game into an extra session.

During the overtime set, St. Mary's controlled play early on, before Bridgewater regained control in the middle of the extra stanza.

At midfield, Bateman gained possession and dribbled through a pair of Seahawks defenders before powering a shot past the St. Mary's keeper on the stick side, propelling the Eagles to a 2-1 overtime win.

St. Mary's outshot Bridgewater by an 18-to-4 margin, and owned a 16-to-6 edge in penalty corners.

In the cage, junior Taylor Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) was sensational, turning away nine St. Mary's scoring attempts en route to recording her fifth win of the year.

Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when the team travels to Sweet Briar to do battle with the Vixens. Action from Sweet Briar starts at 1:30 p.m.
