Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College picked up its first conference win of the season Wednesday night as the Eagles held off the Lynchburg College Hornets, 64-62.
"That was a great team win tonight," Eagles head coach Don Burgess said. "We got contributions from a lot of different people as several guys came off the bench and gave us quality minutes." For the night, the Eagles reserves combined for 24 points 16 rebounds and six assists.
The Eagles used a 6-0 second half spurt to take their biggest lead of the game, 56-50, with 5:49 left in the game. Kyle Hammond scored on a jumper and Daniel McClain added a layup, making the score 54-50. Hammond added a pair of free throws to cap the run and give the Eagles a seven-point cushion.
The Hornets battled back and took the lead, 60-59, on a layup by Gary Boone with 1L34 left to play.
Hammond knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Eagles back on top 62-60 with 1:17 to play.
A jumper by the Hornets' Tucker Lucas tied the score with 43 seconds left, but the Eagles answered when Rick Maloney scored off an assist from Rashad Moore to give the Eagles a two-point lead with 16 seconds to play.
The Hornets had two chances to tie or possibly win the game in the closing seconds. Lucas missed the front end of a one-and-one with 13 ticks remaining, but the Eagles were unable to control the rebound, giving the Hornets another opportunity. Lucas had his shot blocked by Cody Griffith with seven seconds left, but once again the rebound went out of bounds with the Hornets still in possession. A jumper by Nate Campbell bounced off the rim and this time Maloney was able to pull down the rebound just before the final buzzer as the Eagles escaped with the two-point victory.
Hammond was 6-for-10 from 3-point range and led the Eagles with 22 points. Maloney finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 boards.
"Kyle had an excellent game and stayed aggressive at the offensive end the entire game. Rick had an off night on the offensive end, but he was a man on the boards," Burgess said.
Campbell led the Hornets with 15 points and Lucas added 12.
The Eagles also had one of their best nights defensively as the 62 points by the Hornets was 13 below their season average.
"We've been playing hard on defense, but tonight we played hard and smart," said Burgess. "The difference tonight was the fact that we finished at the defensive end by battling on the boards and outrebounding our opponent."
The Eagles are now 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the ODAC. The Hornets drop to 5-8, 1-4 in the conference.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday afternoon when the Eagles host nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon.
"We had a good crowd tonight," Burgess said of Wednesday night's turnout. "The students and the comminity came out and supported us and hopefully we'll have a big crowd here Saturday for Randolph-Macon."
