FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - On the opening day of the 2011 ITA Regional Tournament at the University of Mary Washington, the Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team turned in a solid outing across the board to open the season.
In the championships singles bracket, junior Peter Hawkins went 1-1 on the day. Hawkins claimed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win in the round of 64 before falling a by a 6-4, 6-1 score in second round action to the ninth seed, Noah Joachim.
Freshman Brandon Larsen fared well on the first day as well, going 1-1 in the B2 Singles Bracket. Larsen claimed a 6-7 (3-6), 6-1, 6-2 win in the opening round before falling by a 7-5, 6-4 tally in the quarterfinals. Teammate Christian Lynn dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision in the opening round of B2 singles play.
The Eagles had a pair of players compete in the B3 Singles pod. Freshman Tim Goetz was a 6-1, 6-2 winner in the round of 16, while senior Brent Floyd fell by a 6-4, 6-7 (4-6), 6-3 tally. Goetz fell later in the day in the quarterfinals by a 6-2, 6-1 margin.
In B3 Singles action, it was again two Eagles taking to the court. Freshman Mike Cable was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in the round of 16, while sophomore Sam Churchill fell by a 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 tally in the first round. Cable then dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision in quarterfinal action.
Turning to doubles play, Hawkins teamed up with freshman Evan Stack in the championship doubles bracket and fell by an 8-1 tally in the round of 32.
In B1 Doubles action, Larsen and freshman Christian Lynn dropped a tight 8-5 decision in the round of 16.
Bridgewater got back rolling in the B2 Doubles pod, as Floyd and Goetz teamed up to claim an 8-4 win in the round of 16 in their only action of the day.
Finally, Cable and Churchill teamed up for a hard fought 8-6 win in the round of 16 of the B3 doubles division.
