Eagles Snap Losing Streak With Win Over Hollins

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a victory Tuesday night over Hollins University in ODAC action.

The Eagles won the ODAC contest in four games 25-20, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23 to improve to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in the ODAC.

Hollins (5-15, 1-5 in the ODAC) gave the Eagles all they could handle.

The opening game was tied at 16-16 when the Eagles scored six straight points to gain the upper hand. Cadie Castle (Mineral, Va/Louisa) put down a pair of kills, Bethany Doman (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) added a kill and Kellie Finneran (Chino Hills, Cal./Chino Hills) served up an ace for a 22-16 lead.

Hollins scored three straight before a kill by Doman gave BC a 23-19 lead. After a Hollins sideout, a kill by Cat Snead (Crewe, Va./Nottoway) and an ace from Doman closed out the first game, 25-23.

The Eagles rallied from a 22-20 deficit to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles tied the score at 22-22 on kills by Katie Baker (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) and Snead. An attack error by Hollins and another kill by Baker put the Eagles up 24-22. After a sideout, a Hollins service error accounted for the final point in the Eagles 25-23 victory.

Hollins jumped out to a quick 13-5 lead in the third game and the Eagles were unable to recover as the visitors went on to take a 25-16 win to stay alive in the match. 

The fourth set was another nail-biter. 

The score was tied at 18-18 before a kill by Katie Long (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) and an attack error by Hollins put the Eagles on top 20-18.

Hollins continued to battle and tied the score at 21-21 and 22-22 before a kill by Doman put BC on top 23-22. An attack error by the visitors gave the Eagles a 24-22 lead, but Hollins' Lauren Hays kept her team alive with a kill down the line to make it 24-23. Baker then closed out the match with a kill as the Eagles won the fourth set 25-23 to claim the victory.

Baker led the Eagles with 13 kills and Doman added 11. Lauren Johnson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) paced the team with 17 assists and Casey O'Leary (Quinton, Va./New Kent) finished with 23 digs. Baker, Castle and Long added three blocks each.

Hays paced Hollins with 11 kills and Mandi McDade finished with 20 digs.
