Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior Jennifer Bateman took a hard pass from sophomore Colleen Dickson and beat the Wilson College keeper to the blocker side to propel the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team to a 3-2 victory in a non-conference thriller at Mapp Field.
Wilson took an early lead in the game when Jami DeVanie put the ball in the back of the cage to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
But the lead wouldn't last long for Wilson as junior Joan Burleson punched a shot past the Phoenix keeper 32 seconds later to knot the game at one each.
Bridgewater took the lead in the latter going of the first half when forward Galen Goodman took a Kelly Ryan pass and beat the keeper to put the Eagles up 2-1 which is where the game would remain at the half.
Midway through the second stanza, Wilson forward Maggie Sipps put a Devanie pass to the back of the goal to knot the game up at two each with less than 17 minutes to play.
Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but things remained at a stalemate, forcing an extra session.
In the first overtime, things went back and forth with the two teams having multiple corner attempts but neither team could tally the game-winner, pushing the game to a second extra set.
Wilson took control of the second overtime in the early goings, tallying four corners but the Eagles defense was up to the task thwarting every Phoenix scoring attempt to keep the game knotted up at two.
At the 6:13 mark, Colleen Dickson rocked a shot into the goal crease and collected her own rebound before passing the ball off to an open Bateman who put the ball in the back of the cage to give Bridgewater a hard fought 3-2 win.
Offensively, Burleson led the offense with three shots on the evening as the Eagles outshot the visiting Phoenix by a 14-to-6 gap. Bridgewater also owned a 17-to-11 advantage in corners.
Senior Taylor Waddell earned the win in the cage, turning away one Wilson shot along the way. Phoenix netminder Brandy Holtzapple posted five saves in the loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to McDaniel for the final non-conference tilt of the season. Action is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
