Eagles Celebrate Senior Night With 81-77 Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College celebrated Senior Night with an 81-77 ODAC victory Wednesday over the Emory & Henry College Wasps.

"That was very good team effort and it was gratifying to send the seniors off with a win in their final home game," Bridgewater head coach Don Burgess said. "Oor seniors played a big part in the win. Kyle (Hammond) and Rick (Maloney) had big games. (Justin) Brake hit two huge free throws in the final minute. Mark Gibbs was solid with his effort and energy and Drew Maynard had four assists and no turnovers.

"We also had guys come off the bench and perform well," Burgess added. "Ronnie Thomas had six assists and (Daniel McClain) hit two big jumpers down the stretch. The guys played hard and we found a way to win at the end."

Both squads shot lights out in a high-scoring first half. Each team made 15-of-28 shots from the field (53.6 percent), but the Wasps held a six-point, 44-38, lead on the strength of a solid 9-of-14 effort  from the foul line.

E&H held the lead in the second half until a 3-pointer by BC's Kyle Hammond tied the score, 52-52, with 13:33 left to play.

The Eagles took their first lead of the second half, 57-56, on another 3-pointer by Hammond and the lead grew to four, 60-56, when Hammond connected again from beyond the arc.

Bridgewater was on top by five, 70-65, but seven straight points by the Wasps gave the visitors a two-point lead. Terrance Grigg hit two free throws and JT Murray added a layup to make it a one-point game. Malcolm Green then found the range from downtown, giving E&H a 72-70 lead with 5:14 left to play.

Two free throws by Rick Maloney tied the score and a jump hook by Daniel McClain gave BC a 74-72 lead. After two free throws by the Wasps Bobby Stafford tied the score, McClain knocked down another short jumper for a 76-74 Eagles lead with 3:03 left.

Green hit 1-of-2 at the line to pull the Wasps within one and a layup by Murray gave the visitors a 77-76 lead with 1:07 left to play.

Maloney made 1-of-2 at the line to tie the score and Eagles controlled the rebound after a missed jumper by Grigg. Bridgewater had a breakaway opportunity, but Justin Brake was fouled hard from behind. The BC senior knocked down both foul shots with 21 seconds left, giving the Eagles a 79-77 lead.

The Wasps went to their leading scorer Grigg with a chance to tie, but he was denied on his drive to the hole. Maloney grabbed the rebound and passed the ball ahead to Rashad Moore for an uncontested layup, making the final score 81-77.

Hammond hit 6-of-11 shots from 3-point range and led the Eagles with a game-high 20 points. Maloney finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 boards while Cody Griffith added 12 points off the bench.

Grigg scored 16 for the Wasps and Green added 15. Murray and Stafford each finished with 11 points for E&H.

The win was the second straight for the Eagles, now 8-16 overall and 4-11 in the ODAC. E&H drops to 4-20 overall and 1-14 in conference play.
