Box Score SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College handed the Bridgewater College Eagles an 84-75 defeat Saturday afternoon as the two teams closed out their regular season schedules.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead as Kyle Hammond scored five points, Rick Maloney converted a 3-point play and Tavis Stapleton hit a 3-pointer from beyond the arc.
Roanoke then scored the next nine points to take the lead and the Maroons led the rest of the way. The score was tied three times during the remainder of the half, but at the break, the Maroons led by six, 40-34.
Roanoke pushed the lead to double digits in the first two minutes of the second half and then spent the rest of the game turning back Bridgewater runs.
A layup by Corey Poindexter gave Roanoke its biggest lead at 54-37, but the Eagles scored the next seven points to cut the margin to 10.
The Eagles kept chipping away at the deficit and cut the lead to three when Hammond swished a 3-pointer, making the score 63-60, with 8:10 left.
Roanoke withstood the charge and built its lead back to double digits when Zach Barrett hit two free throws to put the Maroons on top 73-62 with 5:29 remaining.
The Eagles refused to go away and a 3-pointer by Hammond and a bucket by Justin Brake trimmed the margin to six.
Roanoke's Kwasi Amponsah and Hammond traded 3-pointers before Poindexter hit 1-of-2 at the line to put the Maroons up by seven. Cody Griffith then converted a layup and the Eagles were down by just five, 77-72, with 2:47 left.
Logan Singleton hit 1-of-2 foul shots to put Roanoke's lead at six, but Hammond found the range again from beyond the arc to make it a one possession game, 78-75, with 1:22 left to play.
That turned out to be Bridgewater's final points as Roanoke's Melvin Felix connected on four straight foul shots and a layup to provide Roanoke's final margin of victory, 84-75.
Hammond scored 29 points for the Eagles on a 10-for-16 shooting performance. Hammond hit 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc. Cody Griffith was the only other Eagle in double figures as he scored 16 points.
Felix paced the Maroons with 21 points and Singleton finished with 18.
The Eagles finished the regular season with an 8-17 overall record and a 4-12 mark in the ODAC. Roanoke finished the regular season at 11-4 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
Bridgewater will be the No. 10 seed in the conference tournament and will be on the road Tuesday for a play-in game. BC's destination will be a return trip to Salem for another matchup with the Maroons. The ODAC office will release the first-round pairings following the conclusion of Saturday's games.
