Box Score 3 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – On the final day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., the Bridgewater Eagles softball team used a trio of outstanding pitching performances to earn victories over Trine, Waynesburg and Emmanuel (Mass.)
Bridgewater topped Trine in the opening game by a 2-0 score, before blanking Waynesburg by an 8-0 score in five innings. In the nightcap, the Eagles topped Emmanuel by a 5-0 score to end the week with a 6-1 record.
Against Trine, the Eagles got on the board in the first with a Lauren Childress double down the left field line, which plated Emily Morris to put Bridgewater up 1-0 after an inning.
Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Bridgewater added an additional insurance run when a Melanie Lamb double drove in Angela Spinelli, putting the team ahead 2-0 after four innings.
Over the final two-and-a-half innings, the Eagles held Trine in check, en route to a 2-0 victory, handing the Thunder their first loss of the season.
Leadoff hitter Hillary Rees led the offense in game one with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Starting pitcher Heather Jenkins earned the victory in the circle, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout. Jenkins punched out six in the win.
Trine was led offensively by a trio of players with one hit each, while hurler Andi Gasco picked up the loss.
In the second game of the day, against Waynesburg, a solid offensive performance teamed together with an impressive outing in the circle pushed Bridgewater to an 8-0, five-inning victory.
Bridgewater opened the game with a pair of runs, when a Sarah Heretick two-RBI double plated Emily Morris and Kasey Anderson to put the Eagles up 2-0.
In the circle, Amber Marstin struck out eight Waynesboro batters in a row to open the game, while the Eagles notched another run off of a Morris single to push the lead to 3-0.
Bridgewater added another run to the board in the fourth, when an error on the shortstop kept the inning alive, plating Drew Rutledge to put the Eagles up 4-0.
Marstin shut down the Yellow Jackets again in the top of the fifth, before a Kristen Combs single drove in Morris to push the advantage to 5-0.
One batter later, Breaunna Hinegardner drilled the first pitch over the center field fence scoring three runs to put the Eagles up 8-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Marstin cut the Yellow Jackets down in order to give the Eagles an 8-0 win.
At the plate, Morris' 2-for-2 game led the way. The senior drove in a run and scored twice in the win.
In the circle, Marstin was impressive, tossing a two-hit shutout. The sophomore struck out 11 in the win.
Finally, the Eagles scored runs in the first three innings against Emmanuel en route to a 5-0 victory.
In the first frame, a Childress double down the left field line drove in Rees to open the scoring, pushing the Eagles up 1-0.
After a scoreless top of the second for Emmanuel, a pair of RBI doubles from the bats of Sarah Goodman and Rees pushed the Bridgewater lead to 3-0.
Emmanuel was shut down, 1-2-3 in the third before Aven Thomas crossed home plate on a Morris fielder's choice, running the Eagles lead to 4-0.
Bridgewater rounded out the scoring in the fourth when a Hillary Rees sacrifice fly to right field, drove in Leah Cossentino to finalize the scoring at 5-0.
At the plate, Goodman's 2-for-3 outing paced the way. The sophomore scored a run and drove in another in the win, while Rees pitched in a 2-for-2 outing with two RBI.
In the circle, Summer Ramsey tossed the third shutout of the day, throwing a complete-game two hitter. Ramsey struck out five in the win.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, March 16 when crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite comes to Bridgewater for a twinbill. Action opens at 3:00 p.m.
