BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Behind a pair of homeruns and two wins in the circle by sophomore hurler Heather Jenkins, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team swept visiting Roanoke College in an ODAC twinbill at the BC Softball Field.

The wins for Bridgewater snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Maroons.

Bridgewater claimed game one by a 3-0 score, before coming from behind and holding off a late Roanoke surge to earn the game two victory by a 6-5 score.

After a scoreless first inning, in which the Eagles loaded the bases but came away empty, Bridgewater got on the board with a two-run home run to center field off of the bat of Hillary Rees to take a 2-0 lead over the visiting Maroons.

Roanoke was put down without a run in the top of the third before Bridgewater added another insurance run in the home half of the inning off of a Sarah Heretick single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead after three frames.

Both teams settled in across the remainder of the game as neither team was able to put more than one hit on the board in any of the final four innings as Bridgewater took a decisive 3-0 win in game one.

At the plate, Emily Morris' 2-for-3 game paced the Bridgewater offense, while Rees' two-run blast proved to be the difference.

In the circle, Jenkins was lights out, tossing a six-hit shutout. The sophomore struck out eight to earn her eighth win of the season.

Game two saw the two teams lock up in a pitcher's duel early before Bridgewater tacked two runs on the board in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

Bridgewater turned to small ball to start the third when a speedy Kasey Anderson singled through the left side and then stole second base to put a runner in scoring position with no outs.

Two batters later, Anderson scored on a RBI groundout from the bat of Aven Thomas to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

During the ensuing at-bat, Morris drilled a 1-2 pitch the opposite way, scoring Rees to extend the Eagles lead to 2-0.

Roanoke quickly answered in the top of the fourth with three runs, to take its first lead of the day at a 3-2 tally.

Bridgewater answered in the home half of the fifth when Morris drove the first pitch over the fence, scoring Thomas to give the Eagles the lead back at a 4-3 margin.

Again, Roanoke wouldn't go away. In the top of the sixth an error on Angela Spinelli allowed Stephanie Clark to reach safely and pushed in Felicia Lowery to knot the game up at four each.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bridgewater plated two more runs on a Drew Rutledge single and a Kristen Combs sacrifice fly to regain the lead at a 6-4 tally.

Roanoke again answered, loading the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. The Maroons drove in one run on a Meghan Weingard groundout, but Jenkins retired the last batter on strikes to earn the win and give the Eagles the doubleheader sweep over Roanoke by a 6-5 score.

At the plate, Rees led the way with a 3-for-4 game. Morris was also outstanding going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Jenkins picked up the game two win in relief. The sophomore tossed the final 3.2 innings of the game, allowing three runs on three hits to pick up the win.

Two players led Roanoke with 2-for-4 games at the plate, while Lis Norwich picked up the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.

The win was Bridgewater's eighth in its last nine games.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday, March 30 when Lynchburg comes to town.
