Box Score SALEM, Va. – Lynchburg plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning, while fielding errors proved costly for second-seeded Bridgewater as the Eagles dropped the opening round game of the ODAC softball tournament by a 5-3 score to the Hornets.
Bridgewater starter Heather Jenkins got off to a rocky start, loading the bases twice in the first four innings, but worked her way out of each jam to keep the game scoreless.
After three and a half scoreless frames, Bridgewater took a lead in the fourth when a Lauren Childress single scored Drew Rutledge to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Lynchburg answered in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to put the Eagles down 2-1, before the Eagles tallied a run off of a Hillary Rees single in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at two each.
Both teams were held off of the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh to push the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Lynchburg scored a run on a fielder's choice to put the Eagles down 3-2 after seven and a half.
Smart base running in the bottom of the eighth from freshman Kasey Anderson allowed the Eagles to tie the game back up on a RBI groundout from Drew Rutledge, bringing the score to 3-3 after eight complete.
Lynchburg plated two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 lead before putting the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the frame as Bridgewater fell to the loser's bracket with a 5-3 loss to the Hornets.
Childress paced Bridgewater in the first game of the day with a 2-for-4 outing, with a RBI.
Jenkins owned a no-hitter through five, but picked up the loss in the circle, going eight complete, allowing five runs on seven hits. The sophomore pitcher struck out seven in the loss, but also walked seven.
Lynchburg was led at the plate by Meagan Fredenberg's 2-for-3 outing.
Hurler Katie Bruce earned the victory, pitching all nine innings, allowing eight hits, while striking out just one.
Bridgewater is back in action at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game against the Roanoke Maroons.
