Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Senior Day for the Bridgewater Eagles softball team, the Eagles exploded for 23 runs in 10 innings of play to dispatch visiting McDaniel in a non-conference tilt. Bridgewater won game one by a 13-3 score before taking the nightcap by a 10-1 score, with both games being called after five innings.
Bridgewater wasted no time in jumping all over the Green Terror in the opener, tallying six runs in the first inning.
The scoring started in the first when senior Drew Rutledge reached on an error pushing home fellow senior Leah Cossentino to take a 1-0 lead.
One batter later, a Sarah Heretick walk pushed in second baseman Emily Morris to extend Bridgewater's lead to 2-0. During the ensuing at bat, the Eagles blew the game open when a Kristen Combs single drove in Rutledge and Lauren Childress to make the score 4-0.
Bridgewater rounded out the scoring in the first when an Aven Thomas fly ball wasn't handled in right field which allowed Combs and Heretick to score, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead after one frame.
Following a scoreless second, McDaniel cut into Bridgewater's lead with a two-run third to bring the game to a 6-2 Eagles advantage through two-and-a-half innings.
The Eagles put two more runs on the board in the home half of the third when a Combs double was followed by an Angela Spinelli double. Spinelli jaunted home on the play off of an errant throw from the right fielder to push the game to an 8-2 Eagles lead.
McDaniel again answered in the fourth with a run of its own before the Eagles exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Spinelli opened the scoring with a rope to right center field which scored Combs and Melanie Lamb to put the Eagles up 10-3.
Two batters later an Emily Morris single drove in Spinelli to tack on another run, before a two-RBI single from Childress put Bridgewater up 13-3.
Starting pitcher Summer Ramsey slammed the door in the top of the fifth to preserve the win for the Eagles.
Combs' 3-for-3 game paced the Eagles offense in the opener, while Morris and Spinelli added 2-for-3 games for Bridgewater at the plate, with Spinelli driving in a game-high three runs.
In the circle, Ramsey was effective, going the distance to earn her third win of the year. Ramsey tossed five innings of five-hit work, allowing three runs in the process.
Right fielder Rachel Sidney paced the McDaniel attack, going 2-for-3 from her leadoff post, while Kaitlyn Vadenais picked up the loss in the circle for the Green Terror.
In game two, Bridgewater scored in every inning, including a one-run first. Childress singled to the shortstop in the bottom of the first to push in leadoff hitter Sarah Goodman to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The Eagles tacked three runs on the board in the second to take a four-run lead over the Green Terror. Goodman singled to the opposite way to drive in the first run of the inning before a Lamb double pushed in Goodman to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage. Bridgewater wrapped up the scoring in the second on a Morris single to take a 4-0 lead after two complete.
After mowing through the McDaniel lineup in the third, the Eagles got some additional insurance in the home half of the inning when a Spinelli three-run blast blew the game open at a 7-0 tally.
Bridgewater again posted a three-run inning to put the pressure on McDaniel after four as the Eagles extended their lead to a 10-0 margin. Spinelli opened the scoring with a single to drive in Childress before a Goodman single plated two runners to put the Eagles ahead by 10.
McDaniel scraped out a run in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles were victorious by a 10-1 margin in five innings.
Goodman and Spinelli paced the Bridgewater offense in the game with both players going 2-for-3. Goodman drove in a trio of runs in the win and scored twice, while Spinelli drove in game-high four runs and also score twice.
Sophomore starter Amber Marstin picked up the win for the Eagles in the circle. Marstin went the distance, allowing one run on just three hits.
Three McDaniel players scraped out a hit each to pace the Green Terror offense, while Erinne Warrenfeltz posted the loss.
The game marked the final home game for Childress, Combs, Cossentino, Morris, Rutledge and Spinelli.
Bridgewater sits at 31-11 on the season and now awaits the announcement of the field for the 2011 NCAA Regional Tournament.
