Field Hockey Falls 2-1 to Hendrix

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sophomore forward Galen Goodman scored in the eighth minute to put the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey up early, but the squad couldn't overcome a pair of second half Hendrix goals as they fell by a 2-1 score in the opening game of the Mapp Invitational.

After a quick start for the Eagles, Goodman took a Kelly Ryan pass and beat the Warriors keeper to put Bridgewater ahead by a 1-0 score just seven minutes, 45 seconds into the game.

The two teams had opportunities over the remainder of the opening frame, but it was Bridgewater holding a one goal lead as the game headed to the intermission. Hendrix an opportunity to net the equalizer on a penalty shot in the final minutes of the first half, but Eagles keeper Taylor Waddell denied the Maggie DesPain shot to keep the game at a 1-0 Eagles advantage.

Hendrix outshot Bridgewater by an 8-to-4 tally in the opening half and owned a 9-to-2 edge in corners during the first 35 minutes.

Out of the halftime break, Bridgewater peppered the cage with a pair of shots, but couldn't find cotton before the Warriors netted the equalizer seven minutes into the second half. Defender Elizabeth Lancaster pulled a shot out of the air with her stick and beat Eagles keeper Taylor Waddell to the stick side to knot the game at one each.

Following an even stretch of play from both teams, Hendrix found the back of the net when DesPain put the ball in the back of the cage off of a corner insert from Lancaster to take a 2-1 lead.

Over the final minutes, the Eagles had a number of opportunities, but couldn't force overtime, before eventually falling by a 2-1 score.

Bridgewater was led offensively by Goodman's two shots, while Ryan tallied the assist on the Eagles' lone goal to aid the offense.

The Eagles were outshot by a 13-to-8 tally. Hendrix owned a 17-to-6 edge in corners.

Hendrix keeper Betsy Kelly picked up the victory, recording four saves along the way, while Waddell notched six saves in the loss.

Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, when they close out the Mapp Invitational with a showdown against St. Vincent. Action is slated for 3:00 p.m.
