BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Gould tallied four goals as the Bridgewater Eagles (2-4) field hockey team exploded for the most goals since last season's nine goal output against St. Vincent in a 9-0 rout of visiting Hood College (2-3) at Mapp Field.
Bridgewater wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard when junior Jennifer Bateman beat the keeper to the blocker side on an open look at the cage to put the Eagles ahead by a 1-0 tally just 97 ticks into the contest.
The Eagles maintained the intensity for the next 20 minutes before Bateman opened an end of the half scoring barrage off of a rebound from her own deflected shot to put Bridgewater up by a pair in the 23rd minute.
Bridgewater extended its lead 73 seconds later when sophomore Jennifer Tompkins put a shot past the Hood keeper's stick to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead at the 23:53 mark.
Five minutes later, Gould netted her first tally of the game off of an assist from Kelly Ryan to add an insurance goal before scoring again less than two minutes later to put Bridgewater up by a 5-0 tally.
Sophomore Galen Goodman finalized the first-half scoring in the 34th minute off of a centering pass from Ryan to give the Eagles a 6-0 advantage as the two teams headed to the intermission.
At the onset of the second half, the Eagles again were quick to tweak the scoreboard when Ryan notched an unassisted goal to put Bridgewater up by a 7-0 score.
In the 53rd minute, Gould notched her first-career hat trick off of a pass from Bateman to extend the Eagles lead to 8-0 before scoring again with under two minutes to play to finalize the scoring at a 9-0 tally.
On the day, Bridgewater outshot Hood by a 29-to-2 tally and owned a 22-to-2 advantage in corners.
Gould's four goals are the most since Kristen Combs found the back of the cage four times in last season's 8-1 win over Sweet Briar.
In the cage, Taylor Waddell picked up the split shutout with sophomore Jessica Balsano. The two Eagles goalies split time in the cage, while Balsano notched the only save for the Eagles.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday evening at Washington and Lee. Action against the Generals is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
