Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater field hockey team dropped a Saturday afternoon non-conference game, 1-0, on senior day to St. Mary's (Md.) on Mapp Field.
Junior Colleen Dickson wasted little time taking the ball to the goal in the second minute, but shoot the ball wide. Freshman Taylor Prillaman closed out the first half for Bridgewater with a wide shot as well.
Bridgewater goal keeper Jessica Balsano acquired her lone save of the game in the 25th minute from a shot by Seahawks forward, Morgan Lempke.
Freshman Rachael Loy took five corners for the Eagles during the first half of play. St. Mary's received two corner shots for the half.
The second half for the Eagles resulted with six unsuccessful corner shots and five shots on goal.
Two shots were taken by Bridgewater in the first overtime and one by St. Mary's but neither school could break the deadlock.
By the end of the second overtime the score was still 0-0 with Bridgewater shooting 20 game total corner shots and St. Mary's shooting three. The Eagles shot 16 times compared to the Seahawks only shooting three times. SMC goal keeper, Christy Bishop, walked off the field with a shutout and 12 saves for the day.
Junior midfielder, Kathleen Nuckols, took the first penalty shot for the Eagles during the shootout. Nuckols's shot was saved by the Seahawks goalie. St. Mary's first shot was wide turning the ball over to the Eagles for senior Joan Burleson to take the second shot for Bridgewater, which was also too wide.
Seahawks Ally Dahlen stepped up and put the ball in the back of the goal for notch number one for St. Mary's.
Sophomore Caroline Augsburger attempted to tie the score 1-1 in the shootout but the goal keeper saved the shot keeping St. Mary's in the lead.
Prillaman and Jennifer Tompkins waited for their turn at a penalty shot for the Eagles but Daniella Hanacek stuck the shot past the Bridgewater keeper and scored the game winning point for St. Mary's.
The field hockey team travels across town the Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up starting under the lights at 7p.m.
