Second-Half Goals Lift Maroons To A 2-0 Victory Over Eagles

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Roanoke scored two second half goals Wednesday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 2-0, in ODAC soccer action.

The loss was the third straight for the Eagles as they drop to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the ODAC. Roanoke is now 8-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half on even terms. The Eagles had a slight 6-4 edge in shots with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Roanoke goalie Cole Sinclair made two big saves in the first half to keep the Eagles off the board. In the 18th minute, Bridgewater freshman Ben Lewis pounded a shot from 25 yards out that Sinclair denied with a diving stop. In the 38th minute, Bridgewater's Kevin Gorman had a direct kick from straight away, 20 yards out, but once again a diving Sinclair came away with the save.

After the scoreless first half, the Maroons broke the tie in the 60th minute when Patrick Bain dribbled in from the left side and beat Bridgewater goalie Kevin Morris from 12 yards out for a 1-0 Roanoke lead.

The Eagles appeared to have scored the equalizer minutes later, but the goal was waved off. The Eagles sent a high ball into the box that Roanoke keeper Sinclair tried to handle, but he was unable to cleanly catch the ball. Bridgewater's Sawyer Janes booted the loose ball into the net, but the goal was waved off when the official ruled that the Eagles had made contact with the goalie when he made the attempt to catch the high ball.

The Maroons then added an insurance goal when Garrett Eldridge scored on a direct kick with less than three minutes left on the clock for the final 2-0 margin.

The Eagles finished with a 15-13 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Roanoke's Sinclair finished with nine saves while Morris made five saves for the Eagles.

Bridgewater returns to action Saturday when the Eagles travel to Lynchburg to face the Hornets. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
