Volleyball Wins Four-Set Match Over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – Bridgewater volleyball player Katie Long powered down 15 kills in leading the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday night in Shingleton Gymnasium.

With the win, the Eagles advance to a record of 7-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Shenandoah drops to 2-6 in the ODAC.

Sophomore Megann Grimes was not far behind Long with 14 kills and four solo blocks. Senior Cadie Castle recorded 11 kills for the Eagles.

Setter Lindsay Kallam totaled 48 assists and two blocks. Libero Casey O'Leary led the back row with 17 digs. Senior Bethany Doman totaled 14 digs and junior Ashley Weik chipped in 11.

Samantha Schambach led the Hornets with nine kills, while Mary Harshman chipped in nine digs from the back row. Setters Blake Parkes and Kelcy Brown recorded 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Eagles came out swinging in set one, pounding out 15 kills on their way to hitting .367 in a 25-17 win. The two teams traded points until a kill from Grimes that put the Eagles ahead making the score 11-10. Back-to-back kills from Doman pushed Bridgewater three points ahead of Shenandoah. A final kill from Grimes ended the set.

Shenandoah took the lead early on in the second set but the Bridgewater front row stepped up and recorded three kills in a row putting the Eagles ahead by four points. The Hornets pulled ahead with a seven-point lead until a timeout was called by the Eagles. Freshman Maddy Carter came out of the timeout and nailed a kill, but Shenandoah kept a two-point lead until the end making the final score 25-23.

Bridgewater defeated the Hornets in the third set, taking a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 win. The Eagles took an early four-point lead and kept the four-point gap for a majority of the set. Castle finished the set with back-to-back kills.

The Eagles came out of the gate strong for the fourth set with an early six-point lead. Bridgewater kept a five-point lead on Shenandoah and two service aces from senior Kylie Graham ended the set and match 25-17.

The volleyball team travels to Randolph College for another ODAC match-up on Friday at 7 p.m.
