Volleyball Defeated by Generals, 3-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Cadie Castle and junior Katie Long led the Bridgewater volleyball team with 10 kills each in a 3-1 loss to Washington and Lee on Wednesday night in Nininger Hall.

Bridgewater (16-13, 8-3 ODAC) sits in a three-way tie for third place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. The Generals (22-7, 10-1 ODAC) advance to the number two position in the conference standings.

Senior libero Casey O'Leary led the back row with 26 digs on the evening. Senior Bethany Doman had 17 digs and freshman Nikki Snyder chipped in 16.

Junior setter Lindsay Kallam totaled 32 assists and 12 digs for the Eagles to post the double-double.

Sophomore Megann Grimes and Doman each added eight kills, while freshman Maddy Carter tallied six.

Outside hitters M.A. Boles and Anna Lausberg recorded double-doubles on the night for Washington and Lee. Boles had 19 kills and 12 digs, while Lausberg had 12 kills and 10 digs.

Two Washington and Lee setters stood out on the evening. Freshman Alex Kinzer totaled 22 assists and junior Meghan Meleski had 14.

Bridgewater came out strong with an early nine-point run in the first set to take on an 11-6 lead. Washington and Lee cut the lead to two on a kill by Alex Kinzer. Bridgewater survived the Washington and Lee surge before back-to-back kills from Long and Castle ended the set, 25-21.

The Generals upheld a two-point lead over Bridgewater throughout the second set. A block from Kallam and Grimes narrowed the score to 16-15. Washington and Lee finished off the set with three kills from Boles to take the set by a 25-20 score.

Two kills from Boles out of the gate gave the Generals an early lead in the third set. Bridgewater took the lead with a five-point run behind the serving of Doman. Three Eagles kills, a service ace and a Generals error stretched the lead to 9-6. Meleski and Katie Toomb tied the set 15-15 with a block. The two teams traded the lead eight more times until a kill and two serves from Boles ended the set to hand Washington and Lee a 27-25 victory.

The two teams traded points to the 11-10 mark until Washington and Lee pulled ahead by four points in the fourth set. The Generals kept a four-point lead over Bridgewater and finished the set, 25-18, with a block from Toomb.

The Bridgewater volleyball team travels to Catholic University on Saturday for the Catholic Tri-Match. The Eagles take on the host Cardinals at 11 a.m. and Frostburg St. at 1 p.m.
