Volleyball Moves to Semifinal Round After 3-0 Win Over Emory and Henry

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater volleyball team will advance to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals for the first time since 2009 after a 3-0 sweep over Emory and Henry College on Wednesday night in Nininger Hall.

Junior Katie Long stood out on the night recording a game-high 17 kills to lead the way for the Eagles. Senior Bethany Doman and sophomore Megann Grimes tallied eight and seven kills for the Eagles, respectively. Doman also chipped in a game-high 10 digs for the Eagles.

Senior Casey O'Leary followed behind Doman with eight digs and junior Lindsay Kallam recorded seven digs. Kallam also led the Eagles in assists with a game-high 31.

Emory and Henry's Nicole Tesh led the Wasps front row with 12 kills and Hannah Stewart recorded nine digs on the night to pace Emory and Henry defensively.

Bridgewater dominated the first set out of the gate earning the first seven points. Long and Grimes each recorded back-to-back kills in the early run. Later in the set, the Eagles repeated the seven-point run but this time with two kills from Long, a kill from Kallam, and four Wasps errors to stretch the score to 16-3. A kill from Long ended the set, 25-7.

In the second set, the two teams traded points but Emory and Henry kept a close lead over the Eagles. Bridgewater pulled away due to five errors from the Wasps putting the Eagles up, 17-15. Two kills from Doman put the Eagles in a spot to take the set and a final kill from Doman concluded the set, 25-21.

The Eagles benefited early in the third set from four Wasps errors putting the score at 6-3. Emory and Henry was able to come back and tie the set 15-15 but a kill from Long put Bridgewater ahead by one. The Eagles finished the set and the match with back-to-back kills from Long and a kill from Castle to finalize the third set with a 25-19 victory.

Bridgewater will travel to Randolph-Macon College on Saturday to take on the Washington and Lee Generals in the semifinal match. For more information on the conference tournament, visit the ODAC's home page at www.odaconline.com.
