Eagles Fall to No. 8 Messiah, 57-37

Box Score

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Senior guard Jessica Mullen scored a team-high 11 points and the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team held eighth-ranked Messiah College well below their season scoring average, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell by a 57-37 tally to the Falcons on the opening day of the Puerto Rico Shootout.

In a slow-moving first half, the Eagles (1-5) held tight with Messiah (9-0) as the Falcons clinged to a four-point lead at the intermission.

Bridgewater never led in the contest as Messiah heated up in the second half, shooting 48% (16-of-33) from the floor to pull away to a 20-point victory over the Eagles.

Mullen converted 4-of-10 shots from the floor, including a trey to lead the Eagles with 11 points on the afternoon. Freshman Cassidy Burkholder provided a solid spark for Bridgewater off of the bench, tallying eight points in just 18 minutes of action.

On the glass, sophomore Shannan Thorne pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Mullen chipped in an additional six boards as Bridgewater was out-rebounded by a 42-33 margin.

Messiah was paced by Dori Gyori's double-double effort. Gyori tallied a game-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds to record the double-double. Kira Maier added an additional 15 points for the Falcons in the win.

Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday against Sacred Heart (PR). Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
