BRIDGEWATER, Va. –After losing the first set of the night to Emory and Henry, the Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team came back in full force to take the next three sets for the win during the home opener in Nininger Hall on Friday.
The Eagles now hold a 3-6, 1-1 ODAC record, while the Wasps are now 7-3, 0-1 in ODAC play.
Katie Long led the Eagles with 17 kills, followed by Cadie Castle with 12. Freshman Kristen Trice recorded eight kills with no errors and a hitting percentage of .727.
Casey O'Leary continued to top the digs list tallying 12 in the game. Two players topped the Eagles in assists, Lindsay Kallam (21) and Kylie Graham (16). Megann Grimes also put away five blocks on the night.
Jamie Cockerham led the Wasps with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Hannah Stewart was not far behind with 10 kills and 10 digs.
The Wasps took the lead early in the first set due to errors from the Eagles and grabbed the victory with three important kills toward the end making the final score 25-23.
Emory and Henry came out strong for the second set and took an 8-4 lead over the Eagles until an important timeout was called by Bridgewater. After the timeout, a kill by Bethany Doman tied the score 14-14, which gave the Eagles momentum to win the set 25-23.
The third set was neck and neck, until two kills by Trice and Castle and an important timeout was called by Bridgewater. The Eagles turned the game around coming out of the timeout and stole the set 25-21 for the win.
Bridgewater went on a six point run after the steady rally in the fourth set, which put them in the position to sweep the match 25-17.
The Eagles host the Quakers of Guilford on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Nininger Hall.
