BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On the strength of 15 kills, 4 blocks and a hitting percentage of .750 from sophomore Megann Grimes, the Bridgewater College volleyball team grabbed its third consecutive home win on Wednesday night. The Eagles defeated Roanoke College 3-0 in Nininger Hall.
The Eagles (5-6, 3-1 ODAC) swept the first game 25-12 from the Maroons (7-7, 1-4 ODAC). Bridgewater took a 12-4 lead, with three early kills from Grimes.
Roanoke came out fighting during the second set in an evenly played game and tied everything up, 19-19. The teams rallied back and forth until a kill from Katie Long and a service ace from Cadie Castle gave the Eagles a 28-26 victory.
Bridgewater scored the first four points in the third set until Roanoke snuck up on the Eagles tying the match up at 19-19. Roanoke took the lead 23-21 with a kill from Macey Tyree, but back-to-back kills from Maddy Carter and Long put the Eagles back in the match. Grimes and Long finished out the set with three total kills making the final score 26-24.
Katie Long and Cat Snead each recorded 10 kills, while Casey O'Leary totaled 15 digs from the back row.
Junior Lindsay Kallam set the ball 29 times and senior Kylie Graham added 12 assists for the Eagles.
Allison White led the Maroons with 11 kills and Mackenzine Tyree tallied 10 digs for the loss.
The Eagles travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. on Saturday for the Blue Jay Classic. Bridgewater takes on Rochester (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. and Elizabethtown at 3 p.m.
