Box Score YORK, Pa. - York College scored the game's first 15 points Saturday afternoon and never led by less than 10 points the rest of the way in a 79-53 women's basketball victory over Bridgewater in the title game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
The first five minutes proved to be disastrous for the Eagles as the Spartans bolted out to a 15-0 lead. Bridgewater missed both of its shots in the first five minutes and turned the ball over six times.
The Eagles finally got on the board when Heather Cantrell knocked down a jumper at the 14:41 mark, making the score 15-2.
The Spartans led by as many as 16 points before an 8-2 Eagles run trimmed the deficit to 10 points.
After a layup by tournament MVP Kristen Haley put the Spartans on top 28-12, the Eagles scored the next five points on a pair of foul shots by Cassidy Burkholder and a 3-pointer by Molly Shelley. Haley scored again from inside the lane area, but Holly Morgan answered with a 3-pointer to trim the York lead to 30-20 with 6:10 left in the first half.
The Spartans then regained control with a 14-2 run to take a 44-22 lead with 1:32 left to play in the half.
Haley led the Spartans with 17 points and two of her teammates recorded double-doubles. Brittany Hicks added 15 points and 13 rebounds while point guard Aja Wallpher scored 10 points and dished out 10 assists.
Morgan, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Eagles with 12 points and Burkholder added 11.
The Eagles held their own on the glass as York managed a slim 44-42 edge in rebounds. Oshene Kelly pulled down eight rebounds for Bridgewater and Cantrell added seven boards.
One day after shooting 46 percent from the floor, the Eagles could not buy a basket against the Spartans. Bridgewater made just 15-of-55 shots for 27.3 percent accuracy. Taking care of the basketball was once again a problem as the Eagles turned the ball over 29 times.
Bridgewater returns to action Thursday evening when it opens its home schedule against Catholic. Tip off in Nininger Hall is set for 7 p.m.
