WASHINGTON D. C. - Bridgewater College won four of the six singles matches Friday afternoon to edge Catholic, 5-4, in women's tennis action.
The Eagles were down 2-1 after the completion of doubles play. Bridgewater picked up its one doubles point at No. 1 where Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan defeated Marge Selinger and Elaina Sceusa 8-3.
The Cardinals won two closes matches to take a 2-1 lead in doubles. At No. 2 Catholic's Elizabeth Harvey and Caitlin Porter edged Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone, 8-5. At No. 3, Catholic's Ritamarie Holden and Emma Needham downed BC's Jessie Mitchell and Miranda Donovan by the same 8-5 score.
The Eagles controlled play at the top of the singles ladder, winning the first three matches. Gordon blanked Selinger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. O'Bryan the downed Holden 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot. At No. 3, Wilson lost the first set 3-6, but bounced back to even the match by taking the second set 6-3. A tiebreaker decided the match with Wilson winning 10-3.
The Eagles also won at No. 5 when Mitchell defeated Sceusa 6-1, 7-6.
The Cardinals took wins at No. 4 and No. 6.
Porter slipped past Stone 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and Isabel Tanco defeated Donovan 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
The Eagles return to action Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's College.
