BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Christopher Newport won its 11th match in a row Saturday morning when the Captains defeated Bridgewater, 5-0, in non-conference women's tennis action.
The Captains took a 3-0 lead following three competitive doubles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan lost to Kim Morrissett and Marion Gloor, 8-4. The match at No.2 was the closest doubles contest as CNU's Jodi Noland and Jackie Gaine edged BC's Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Bridgewater's Rita Murphy and Miranda Donovan came up short against Angela Stallman and Melisande Downs, 8-4.
CNU closed out the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At No. 5, Gaine defeated Stone 6-0, 6-1 while Stallman stopped Donovan 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
The other four matches were not finished, but there was some close action.
At No. 1 singles, CNU's Morrisett took the first set from Gordon, 6-3, but Gordon led in the second set, 4-1. Same scenario at No. 2 as Gloor downed Donovan 6-3 in the first set, but Donovan was leading 5-2 in the second set when play was stopped.
At No. 3 singles, BC's Wilson fell in the first set to Noland, 6-3, and the second set was tied at 3-3. At No. 4 singles, CNU's Downs took the first set from Jessie Mitchell 6-4 and set two was tied at 2-2.
Bridgewater is now 11-3 overall while CNU improves to 13-4.
