Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior Caroline Augsburger netted two goals and dished out a pair of assists to lead the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team to a 6-0 victory over the Transylvania Pioneers in the 2013 season opener at Sewanee.
Bridgewater peppered the Transylvania goal early in the contest before earning a pair of corners in the early minutes. At the 6:26 mark, sophomore Caroline Fletcher stroked a shot past the Pioneers keeper off of an Augsburger pass to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.
Following the Fletcher tally, Bridgewater's offense kept the pressure on the Pioneers with six shots over the next two minutes. The Eagles again earned a corner and capitalized on the opportunity. Off of the corner insert from sophomore Rachael Loy, senior Colleen Dickson pushed a pass to Augsburger and the junior beat the keeper to build the Bridgewater lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Taylor Prillaman rounded out the first half scoring with a goal coming off of an Augsburger helper in the 16th minute to propel the Eagles to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Bridgewater controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Pioneers by a 21-2 margin. The Eagles also earned seven corners in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Both teams settled in out of the halftime break before the Eagles extended their lead at the 50:53 mark. Augsburger netted an unassisted tally to push the lead to 4-0 before Dickson took a pass from Shannon Strosser and beat the keeper to build a 5-0 Bridgewater advantage.
Sophomore Alenka Ferrufino rounded out the scoring on the afternoon with an unassisted tally at the 65:33 mark to finalize the scoring, with Bridgewater pulling away to a 6-0 victory.
Augsburger led the Bridgewater attack with seven shots, while Prillaman added six shots to help lead the Eagles to a 31-2 advantage in shots.
Senior Jessica Balsano turned away two Transylvania shots in the game to earn the win.
For the Pioneers, Maddie King and Kayla Thurlow each registered a shot in the loss. Netminder Sara Aschbacher recorded 21 saves in the cage for Transylvania.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. showdown with Sewanee.
