Box Score ROANOKE, Va. – In a back-and-forth Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) affair, the Bridgewater Eagles (6-4, 2-0 ODAC) volleyball team defeated the host Roanoke Maroons (7-4, 1-1 ODAC) by a 3-0 tally on Friday evening at the Bast Center.
Bridgewater came from behind to take the first set by a 25-23 score before rolling to an easy 25-13 win in set number two. The Eagles took a see-saw third set by a 25-23 tally to take the match by a 3-0 margin and snap Roanoke's seven-match winning streak.
Roanoke led the opening set by two points early, before the Eagles clawed back to tie the score up at a 2-2 tally as Bridgewater capitalized on a Maroons error to knot things up early.
The Maroons would build a three-point lead at multiple points in the opening set but Bridgewater maintained contact with Roanoke throughout the opening set before taking over late. After a Macey Tyree kill gave Roanoke a 23-22 lead late in the set, the Eagles rattled off three straight points to come from behind and take the set by a 25-23 margin. Back-to-back Katie Long kills gave Bridgewater its first lead of the set at a 24-23 margin, before a Roanoke error ended the set to put the Eagles out in front in the match, 1-0.
Bridgewater wasted little time in jumping all over the Maroons in the second set. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in set two. Roanoke got to within three off of a Carrie Heldreth kill but it was as close as the Maroons would get in the set.
After a service error allowed the Maroons to get to within a 7-3 tally, the Eagles ripped off seven unanswered points to run out to a double-digit lead. Bridgewater capitalized on a number of Roanoke miscues in the second set, while Long put down a kill and freshman Abby Mills delivered two kills to help put the Eagles out in front, 14-3.
Roanoke cut the lead to under single digits on two occasions late in the set, but it was Bridgewater cruising to the easy 25-13 victory in the second set of the evening.
Despite the Eagles running away with the second frame, Roanoke didn't go down without a fight in the third set of the evening. The Maroons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the Eagles began to chip away at the Roanoke lead. Junior Megann Grimes buried a kill to kick-start a mini-spurt by the Eagles which brought Bridgewater to within a 7-5 margin. Sophomore Nikki Snyder squeezed a service ace in on the end line to cut the gap to one before a Grimes kill tied the set up at a 7-7 score.
Bridgewater took its first lead of the set off of a double-block before Roanoke quickly knotted the set back up at eight points each.
Roanoke took the lead back behind three-straight points to own an 11-8 lead in the middle portion of the set. Following the Roanoke run, Bridgewater used three quick points to tie the set back up at 11 points each. Both teams traded points throughout the middle of the set with the score being tied up at a 17-17 tally before Bridgewater finished the match off late in the set. A Grimes kill gave the Eagles a two-point cushion at a 20-18 margin, forcing a Roanoke timeout.
Out of the stoppage, the two teams traded points again before Mills put down a kill to put Bridgewater out in front by a 22-20 gap. Roanoke responded with an Allison White kill and a service ace to tie the set up once again, 22-22.
A Roanoke miscue allowed the Eagles to take a 23-22 advantage before a Long kill put the Eagles on the cusp of victory in a thrilling third set and forced another Maroons timeout. Out of the timeout, Roanoke tallied a point before committing a net violation to hand the Eagles a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the final set and a 3-0 sweep of the match.
Long was stellar in the win, tallying a game-high 14 kills. Grimes was also in double figures on the evening with 10 kills, while the junior committed just one attack error to hit at a blistering .536 attack percentage on the evening.
Senior Lindsay Kallam was efficient with the offense, dishing out 32 assists while fellow senior Mara Hogan led the defense with 18 digs in the win. Mills was also impressive, adding nine kills and 10 digs to just miss a double-double.
Samantha Klosterman led the Roanoke attack with 10 kills, and added 11 digs to post a double-double outing.
Jessica Block delivered 15 assists for the Maroons offense, while Tyree led the defensive unit with 14 digs in the loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Hollins. Start time from Hollins is set for 10:30 a.m.
