Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team (3-1) made the most of its opportunities, but couldn't overcome a solid St. Mary's attack in a 3-2 double overtime loss on Saturday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
After a slow start, St. Mary's (2-2) went on the attack, drawing four penalty corners and firing off two shots before Brady Wolf took an Olivia Edwards pass and found the back of the net to put the Seahawks out in front by a 1-0 score at the 9:15 mark.
St. Mary's stayed on the attack after the goal before Bridgewater broke into the offensive attack zone in the 24th minute. Senior Colleen Dickson stroked a shot into the back of the net at the 23:37 mark to tie the game up at a 1-1 score, which is how it would remain at the intermission.
Despite begin outshot by a 10-1 tally in the opening 35 minutes, Bridgewater made the most of its limited opportunities to draw the game to a 1-1 deadlock at the break.
Out of the intermission, it was St. Mary's staying in their offensive end, but senior Jessica Balsano turned away two early second half scoring attempts by the Seahawks to keep the game at a 1-1 draw.
The game remained in the midfield for the next 10 minutes until the Eagles worked the ball into their offensive end and drew a penalty corner late in the 54th minute. Bridgewater ripped off a shot off of the corner, but couldn't find cotton.
Following the corner, the Eagles earned another penalty corner and a foul off of the corner allowed Bridgewater to earn a penalty stroke at the 55:23 mark. Junior Caroline Augsburger converted the penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season, handing Bridgewater a 2-1 lead.
St. Mary's spent little time in netting the equalizer. Less than five minutes later, the Seahawks drew a corner and converted the penalty corner when Emily Bishop pushed a pass to Claire Kortyna and Kortyna found the back of the net to tie the game up at two goals each, which is how regulation would end.
In the first overtime, it was Bridgewater on the early attack with a pair of shots, but St. Mary's netminder Christy Bishop was up to the task, turning away both Eagles scoring attempts. The Seahawks finished the overtime session on the offensive end, but also went down without a goal as the game remained at a 2-2 deadlock after the first overtime set.
Bridgewater tallied a pair of early shots in the second overtime, but couldn't find the scoreboard before the Seahawks ended the game with a goal in the 94th minute. Carly Todd beat Balsano with a shot at the 93:09 mark to hand the Seahawks a hard fought 3-2 win, snapping Bridgewater's three-game winning streak.
The Eagles were led by the play of Augsburger and Megan Gould who each rattled off two shots in the loss as Bridgewater was outshot by an 18-7 tally.
Balsano made five saves to pick up her first loss of the season.
Rachel Heiss registered six shots for the Seahawks in the win, while Bishop turned away four Bridgewater shots to earn the win.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Mary Washington. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
