Men's Soccer Defeats Southern Virginia, 2-1

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon over Southern Virginia University.

The Eagles dominated possession throughout as the Knights were content to drop back and play defense against the Eagles.

Despite holding a 12-1 edge in shots in the first half, the Eagles were unable to penetrate the defense for a score and the teams went to the halftime break tied at 0-0.

The Eagles finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Ben Lewis beat the keeper from the top of the box for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead. Max Chacon recorded the assist on the play.

Bridgewater added what proved to be the winning goal in the 87th minute when Sawyer Janes beat the keeper to the near post from 20 yards out, making the score 2-0.

Just when it looked as if the Eagles had the game well in hand, the Knights answered back. Less than 30 seconds after the Janes goal, Southern Virginia scored when Dedan Johnson scored on a cross from Kyle Tyree to make it a one-goal game, 2-1.

The Bridgewater defense was solid the rest of the way as the Eagles finished off the 2-1 victory.

The Eagles dominated the stats holding a 27-3 margin in shots, including a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. Bridgewater also led in corner kicks by a 10-0 margin.

Kevin Morris got the start in goal for the Eagles and finished with one save to record the victory.

The Eagles, now 3-3 overall, return to action Tuesday when they host McDaniel College. Game time is 4 p.m.
