Eagles Roll Past Hollins, 3-0

Box Score

ROANOKE, Va. – Sophomore Rachel Donaldson put down a game-high 13 kills to lead three players in double figures in kills as the Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team remained unbeaten in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play with a 3-0 victory over Hollins.

Bridgewater (7-4, 3-0 ODAC) took the opening set by a 25-14 margin before edging out Hollins in set two by a 25-23 tally. The Eagles cruised in the third set, taking a 25-13 victory to sweep the match by a 3-0 score.

It was all Bridgewater early in set number one as the Eagles ran out to a 7-0 lead due in large part to a pair of kills by senior Katie Long and three Mara Hogan service aces.

Hollins (1-9, 0-2 ODAC) got on the board off of a Haley Ortiz kill and kept the differential at six points until a four-point run from the Eagles gave Bridgewater a double-digit advantage. A Megann Grimes kill put the Eagles out in front by a 10-3 tally before kills from Abby Mills, Hogan and Grimes handed Bridgewater a 13-3 lead and forced a Hollins timeout.

Out of the timeout, the two teams traded points until Hollins capitalized on a pair of Bridgewater miscues to cut the Eagles' lead to 14-7, but the seven-point difference was as close as Hollins would get as Bridgewater ran away to a 25-14 victory in the opening set.

Bridgewater took an early lead in set two, but Hollins responded with three unanswered points to take its first lead of the match at a 3-2 tally. Following a Hollins service error which knotted up the set, kills from Long, Grimes and Lindsay Kallam put Bridgewater back out in front at a 6-3 score.

The two teams battled back and forth through the middle of the set with Hollins regaining the upper hand at a 9-8 tally. Both squads traded the lead but it was Hollins maintaining a slim 20-18 lead as the set moved towards its conclusion. A pair of Bridgewater attack errors allowed Hollins to jump in front by a 22-19 margin before back-to-back kills from Donaldson and Megan Lookabaugh cut the Hollins advantage to a single point, forcing a Hollins timeout.

Out of the stoppage, another Bridgewater miscue put Hollins out in front by a 23-21 tally, but the lead was short lived. Two Hollins attack errors, paired with two kills from Donaldson closed out the set, handing the Eagles a hard-fought 25-23 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Hollins came out on fire in the third set of the afternoon, rattling off five of the first six points to own a 5-1 lead over the Eagles. Hollins maintained a sizeable lead over the Eagles in the early goings of the set, taking a 10-5 lead before Bridgewater responded in a big way.

Staring down a five-point deficit, the Eagles ripped off a 12-point run to gain the lead in the set for good. Donaldson pounded down five kills during the stretch, while the Eagles capitalized on a number of Hollins miscues to take a 17-10 lead.

Hollins snapped the run after a Bridgewater attack error as the teams traded points in the middle of the set before the Eagles effectively put the match away. Mills put away a kill to open a six-point run for the Eagles as Bridgewater built a 24-12 advantage. The teams traded the final two points of the match as Bridgewater rolled to a 25-13 victory and a 3-0 sweep over Hollins.

Donaldson's 13 kills led the way for a Bridgewater offense that hit at a .262 clip on the day. The sophomore hit at a stellar .569 attack percentage on the day, while Grimes added 11 kills in the win. Long also tallied 10 kills for the Eagles to round out Bridgewater's players in double figures in kills.

Kallam operated the offense with efficiency, dishing out 33 assists, while also tallying a co-team high 13 digs to pick up the double-double. Mills equaled Kallam's 13 digs to help lead the Bridgewater defense.

Lauren Hays and Jessie Deese led the way for Hollins with six kills each, while Lela Moore added 15 assists in the loss.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph for a conference affair with the WildCats. Start time from Randolph is set for 7 p.m.
