BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After five road games, the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team opened the home season in style with a 3-1 victory over visiting Wilson College on Friday evening at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

Bridgewater controlled the opening minutes of play, pounding the Wilson cage with shots, but Phoenix netminder Gina Weigold was up to the task turning away each Eagles scoring attempt to keep the game scoreless early.

The Eagles broke the deadlock in the middle part of the first half when senior Megan Gould fired a shot past the Wilson keeper and found the back of the net to put Bridgewater out in front, 1-0. Sophomore Taylor Prillaman assisted on the Gould tally, which came off of a corner at the 16:44 mark.

Wilson wasted little time in netting the equalizer. The Phoenix tied the game up late in the 24th minute when Hillary Swartz took a Lauren Hampton past and fired a shot into the back of the cage to tie the score at a goal each which is how the first half would end.

Bridgewater outshot Wilson by an 8-3 tally in the opening half of play, while the Eagles owned a 7-0 advantage in corners.

Out of the halftime break, Bridgewater turned up the heat on the offensive end before taking the lead for good just under three minutes into the second half. Prillaman found the net on a pass from junior Caroline Augsburger off of a corner insert to hand the Eagles a 2-1 advantage at the 37:14 mark.

Eight minutes later, the Eagles added to their lead on a Colleen Dickson goal as Bridgewater owned a 3-1 advantage midway through the final frame.

Bridgewater kept the pressure on the Wilson defense over the rest of the game but didn't find the back of the net again as the Eagles turned in a 3-1 victory in their first-ever game on the newly turfed Jopson Athletic Complex.

Dickson led the offense with a goal on six shots, while Prillaman added a goal on five shots as the Eagles outshot Wilson by a 20-8 tally on the evening.

Senior Jessica Balsano made four saves to pick up the win.

Three players led the way for the Wilson offense with two shots each, while Weigold made six saves in the loss.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday at Juniata. Start time against the Eagles is set for 5 p.m.
