BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team swept Neumann University 3-0 on Friday night to kick off the Fall Fever Tournament at Nininger Hall.
After trading points in the first game, Bridgewater came out on top 25-22. Neumann battled back in the second game, but Bridgewater took the victory with a 25-20 tally, followed by a hard fought third game to notch the win for the Eagles, 25-23.
Points were exchanged back and forth to start off the first game before Neumann took advantage of Bridgewater errors to go on a 4-0 run, building the lead to 7-4. A kill by Megan Lookabaugh along with two aces by Abby Mills allowed the Eagles to lock the game at 11-11.
Megann Grimes tallied a kill to tie the game back up at 14, but Neumann went on a run to boost its lead to 19-15 before another Grimes kill allowed Bridgewater to side out and go on a run of its own. Rachel Donaldson notched a kill and then the Eagles took advantage of a few Neumann miscues to take the lead 20-19, forcing a Neumann timeout.
Out of the stoppage, the two teams battled over the final points until a kill from Katie Long put the game away, giving Bridgewater a 25-22 victory.
Both teams came out strong in the second game and exchanged kills until a service ace by Lindsay Kallam and two Neumann errors handed Bridgewater an 8-4 lead. Kills by Lookabaugh, Long, Grimes, and Kallam allowed Bridgewater to hold its lead at 14-10. The Eagles continued to use the Neumann mishaps, while a block by Lookabaugh and Donaldson boosted the Bridgewater lead to 20-14.
Three straight kills by Donaldson, Grimes and Mills built the lead up to 23-16 before another Long kill ended the game at a 25-20 tally, handing Bridgewater the win.
Neumann came out in the third game and took two straight points, but a Maddy Carter kill capped off a 3-0 run, allowing Bridgewater to take a 4-2 lead. A Long kill followed by an ace from Shannon Skellchock allowed the Eagles to go on another run, boosting their lead to 8-4 and forcing Neumann to call a timeout.
Bridgewater earned four straight points from a Kallam kill and Neumann errors to improve its lead to 15-8. Neumann took advantage of a few Bridgewater miscues to battle back and take the lead 19-18 before Long notched a kill to lock the game at 19-19.
The lead continued to change hands late in the final frame as the game was tied at 20, 22, and 23 before a Donaldson kill and a Neumann error handed the Eagles the 25-23 win.
Long led the offensive efforts for the Eagles with 10 kills, followed by Grimes with eight. Kallam tallied a game-high 22 assists on the night, while Mara Hogan notched a game-high 13 digs.
For Neumann, Ashley Clark paced the way with seven kills and Kat Wolf dished out 20 assists.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday afternoon as it takes on Lebanon Valley at 12 p.m., followed by Frostburg State at 4 p.m. to finish out the Fall Fever Quad Tournament.
