Field Hockey Takes Down Rhodes, 2-0

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In a neutral site contest at the University of Mary Washington, the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team used two first half goals to earn a 2-0 victory over Rhodes College in non-conference action.

After a slow start to the contest, Bridgewater (3-0) moved to the offensive end in the middle of the ninth minute before earning a corner at the 8:34 mark of the contest. Off of the corner, sophomore Alenka Ferrufino stroked a shot past the Rhodes keeper to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.

Following the Bridgewater goal, it was the Lynx going on the attack over the next 20 minutes of the game. During the stretch, Rhodes ripped off 11 shots but Bridgewater netminder Jessica Balsano was up to the task, turning away each scoring attempt to keep Bridgewater out in front by a 1-0 score. At the 32:10 mark, sophomore Taylor Prillaman took a Ferrufino pass and pushed a shot into the back of the net to give Bridgewater an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Despite owning a 2-0 lead at the break, Bridgewater was outshot by an 11-5 margin over the game's opening 35 minutes. Rhodes also owned a 6-1 advantage in corners during the first half of play.

Out of the halftime break, Rhodes (0-3) stayed on the attack and fired off another 10 shots in the second half, but Balsano was again up to the challenge as the senior rejected each scoring opportunity to preserve a 2-0 shutout victory for the Eagles.

Prillaman led the Bridgewater offense with four shots and a goal, while Ferrufino added two shots, a goal and an assist.

Balsano made eight saves on the afternoon to earn her third victory of the year.

Rhodes outshot Bridgewater by a 21-7 tally, with Mary Rose Hazel's six shots leading the way for the Lynx offense.

Kelly Whelan and Erin Bailey split time in the cage with Whelan picking up the loss after allowing both goals in the first half.

Bridgewater is back in action on September 14 at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Eagles and the Seahawks are set to open play at 2 p.m.
