BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Roanoke College moved into undisputed possession of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings with a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over the Bridgewater College Eagles. The two teams entered the day tied atop the standings with 3-0 records, but the Maroons tallied two second-half goals to emerge as the only team in the ODAC without a conference loss.

With the victory, Roanoke improved to 7-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC while the Eagles dropped to 4-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The loss snapped Bridgewater's three-game winning streak.

The Maroons struck first when Marc Dinkel's touch pass found Fortune Sibanda open at the top of the box. Sibanda pounded the shot into the back of the net to give Roanoke a 1-0 lead at the 17:09 mark.

The Eagles knotted the score less than four minutes later. Bridgewater sent a long pass toward the Roanoke goal intended for a streaking Max Chacon. Roanoke goalkeeper Cole Sinclair made an aggressive play in an attempt to clear the ball, but instead, took Chacon out of the play just inside the box. The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick and Alex Farrington beat Sinclair with the PK to tie the score.

The teams went to the break tied at 1-1, but the Maroons broke the deadlock with an early second-half goal. Dinkel delivered a pass from just outside the box along the left baseline and Robby Lentine stroked the shot from point-blank range, giving Roanoke a 2-1 lead.

Dinkel made the score 3-1 when he converted a free kick at the 66:35 mark. Dinkel took the shot from the right side, just outside of the box, and his left-footed stroke curved around the Eagles wall and into the upper corner, just inside the near post.

Roanoke finished the contest with an 18-6 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Bridgewater goalkeeper Kevin Morris recorded seven saves during the game while Maroons' keeper Sinclair turned away two shots.

The Eagles will look to get back into the win column Saturday afternoon when they make the short trip to Lexington, Va., to face Washington and Lee in another ODAC matchup. Game time is 1 p.m.
