Box Score EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles fell 3-0 to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry College Wednesday evening.
Megann Grimes had the first kill to open the first set and placed Bridgewater on the scoreboard. Bridgewater garnered an early lead but Emory & Henry remained close behind and managed to take a brief lead before Grimes had another kill to tie the score, 11-11.
The Wasps had the next four points until a kill by Megan Lookabaugh helped the Eagles keep Emory & Henry within reach before tying the score once again. The teams traded points until the end of the set when the Wasps secured the 25-23 win on a final kill.
The second set started off similarly to the first set as the score remained close. Abby Mills tied the score, 10-10, but the Wasps slipped away with the next few points to maintain a safe distance from the Eagles.
Grimes and Mills delivered a kill each in an effort to decrease the point gap. The Eagles drew closer on two Emory & Henry errors and another kill from Grimes to bring the score to 18-17. However the Wasps maintained their lead and surged ahead for a 25-21 second set win.
Despite a kill by Rachel Kinsey to give the Eagles the first point of the third set, Emory & Henry answered with a five points to grab an early lead. Grimes had three kills for the Eagles to reel the score back in. Carleigh Studtmann helped the effort by adding a kill of her own, but the Wasps never looked back as they surged ahead to seal the match victory with a 25-10 third set win.
The Eagles were led by Grimes and Mills who tallied eight kills each. Kinsey and Studtmann chipped in four kills apiece. Chelsea Owensby led the defense with 18 digs while Shannon Skellcock added nine. Skellchock also recorded 25 assists in the match.
Hannah Doss led Emory & Henry with 13 kills. Maleah Neely led the defense with 13 digs with Tristen Pennington adding 13 of her own. Neely also collected 30 assists and four service aces.
The Eagles are back in action Oct. 21 when they travel to ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
