BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Hollins University, 3-1, in its Dig Pink match Friday evening.
The Eagles took a large lead early on in the opening set as Carleigh Studtmann served 10 points, including kills by Abby Mills, Rachel Kinsey, and Kristen Trice. Hollins managed to sneak in a couple of points but the Eagles pulled away again as Chelsea Owensby served several Hollins attack errors for a 14-2 lead.
Hollins was unable to bridge the point gap and the Eagles capped off their first set victory, 25-6.
In the second set, Hollins was first on the scoreboard but Bridgewater was right behind due to a pair of kills by Megann Grimes and a Hollins attack error, which closed the score to 5-4. Hollins escaped the Eagles and pulled ahead to a steady lead.
The Eagles fought hard to keep Hollins within their reach, decreasing the score to 20-19, forcing Hollins to call a timeout. Bridgewater managed to tie the score, 23-23, but Hollins delivered the final two points for a 25-23 set win.
Despite Hollins collecting the first point of the third set, Grimes had three consecutive kills to bring the Eagles to an early lead. Hollins didn't stay far behind but the Eagles shook them off and continued to lead the set.
Hollins cut the score down to 17-15 but after a brief Bridgewater timeout, the Eagles found their momentum as Shannon Skellchock served an ace while Studtmann and Kinsey added a kill each, for a 21-15 score. Hollins earned one last point on a Bridgewater error, but Mills sealed the 25-16 win with a service ace.
Both teams fought for the lead in the final set, keeping the score tight until Bridgewater pulled away to an 11-7 lead. Hollins was able to draw the score to 12-11 before it became a battle for the advantage, with each squad leveling out the score. However, the Eagles managed to snatch the lead and never let it go.
Although Hollins whittled the score to 24-21, Grimes pounded the winning kill and earned Bridgewater another conference victory.
Grimes led Bridgewater with 14 kills. Kinsey, Mills, and Studtmann chipped in nine apiece. Mills led the defense with 16 digs while Skellchock added 13. Skellchock notched 38 assists in the match and Studtmann and Skellchock collected two service aces apiece.
Hollins was led by Lauren Hays who tallied 11 kills. Haley Ortiz led the defense with 16 digs while Jessie Deese chipped in 13. Lela Moore collected 21 assists on the night.
The match was also designated as the Eagles' Dig Pink game. Bridgewater has worked alongside The Side-Out Foundation to raise breast cancer awareness and education through fundraising and donations.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow morning as they face ODAC rival Roanoke College on their home court. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
