Eagles Run Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of Ursinus and Mt. Aloysius

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Lauren Jenkins drove in five runs and blasted her first career homerun while senior Kasey Anderson pounded out six hits as the Bridgewater Eagles softball team stayed unbeaten over Spring Break with a sweep of Ursinus and Mt. Aloysius on Tuesday morning.

Bridgewater (6-2) defeated Ursinus for the second time in three days, this time by a 7-1 margin before slipping past Mt. Aloysius by a 4-3 score.

Bridgewater owned a slim 2-1 lead in the first game before a five-run sixth inning blew the game wide open.

The Eagles threatened in the first inning against Ursinus before putting a single run on the scoreboard in the home half of the second. Freshman Samantha Bird belted a two-out double to the gap in left field and was pushed home a batter later on a Jen Balcom single to left to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.

Ursinus (1-4) answered in the top of the third when a pair of Bridgewater miscues allowed the Bears to get on the board. Ellen Goldstein reached on an error to start the inning and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Goldstein scored during the next at-bat when Delia Mercurio reached base on another Eagles miscue to knot the game up at one run each.

Jenkins and freshman teammate Samantha Fridley opened the third with singles before the Eagles took a 2-1 lead when Fridley scored on a wild pitch to hand the Eagles the go-ahead run. The score would remain at a 2-1 Bridgewater lead until the bottom of the sixth as both teams settled in at the plate over the middle innings.

Junior Amanda Lutz singled to left field to open the sixth and was replaced on the base paths by Elizabeth Keech. Keech was sacrificed to second by Haley Harris and was driven home a batter later on a Bird single to extend the Bridgewater lead to 3-1. Following a Balcom single and a passed ball to advance Bird home and send Balcom to second, Anderson singled to put runners on the corners. Jenkins watched the first ball go by before drilling a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field fence to hand the Eagles a 7-1 lead. The homer was the first of Jenkins' career.

Harris, who entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of Lutz, retired the Bears side without a run in the seventh to hand the Eagles a 7-1 win in the opener.

Jenkins and Balcom each tallied three hits for the Eagles in the win, while Jenkins led the way with three RBI. The freshman has tallied a hit in each of her first eight games in the Crimson and Vegas Gold. Anderson, Fridley and Bird each added two hits as the Eagles scattered 14 hits in game one.

Harris picked up her first career win in the circle after allowing just one hit over the final four innings of play. The freshman also fanned three batters in the win. Lutz allowed just one run on a single hit over the first three frames.

Ursinus was limited to just two hits in the game while Caitlin Whelen was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits.

The Eagles came from behind in Tuesday's second game to remain unbeaten on their Spring Break trip.

Following two scoreless innings for both teams, Mt. Aloysius got on the board in the top of the third when a Bridgit Yothers single drove in Emilee Gearhart to push the Mounties out in front by a 1-0 score.

Bridgewater quickly responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning. Anderson belted a two-out single and swiped second and was pushed home during the ensuing at-bat on a Jenkins double down the line in right to tie the game up, 1-1.

Both teams went down without a run in the fourth before the Eagles got all of the runs they needed with a three-run fifth. Anderson led off the inning with a single and advanced on an error to put an early runner in scoring position. Jenkins tripled to the gap in left field, scoring Anderson, before being sent home on a Fridley single to hand the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Following a groundout, Brea Hinegardner doubled up the middle, scoring Fridley in the process, to build a 4-1 Bridgewater advantage.

Mt. Aloysius (0-4) nicked starting pitcher Brianna Cox for a single run in the top of the sixth when a Taylor Mansfield double scored Jalisa Westover to cut the Bridgewater lead to 4-2.

The Mounties knocked on the door again in the seventh. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, Chelsea Engeholm was driven home on a Yothers single to cut the Bridgewater lead down to 4-3. Hayley McGowan followed with a single to put runners at first and second with one away for the Mounties. Cox fanned the next batter on a 1-2 pitch before forcing a pop-up to end the game, handing Bridgewater a hard-fought 4-3 win.

Anderson was outstanding at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. The Chatham, Va. native owns nine stolen bases on the year and is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. Hinegardner was also perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 game and one RBI.

Cox (3-1) picked up her third win of the year behind a complete-game effort. The sophomore allowed three runs on 10 hits and fanned four batters to secure the win.

Yothers lead the Mounties with a 3-for-4 game at the plate.

Heather Picard was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits over the first five innings of play.

Bridgewater will take Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday as the team wraps up its Spring Break trip with games against Delaware Valley and Arcadia. First pitch against Delaware Valley is set for 9:30 a.m. with the second game of the day being slated for an 11:30 a.m. first pitch.
