Box Score 2 BUENA VISTA, Va. – Sophomore Karie Burgess drove in a career-high four runs in game number one and three players went deep in the nightcap as the Bridgewater Eagles softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Southern Virginia.
Bridgewater took game one by an 8-1 score before the Eagles rolled to a 9-1 victory in five innings in game number two.
In game one, the Eagles used a four-run second inning to blow the game open before finishing off the win in the latter innings to snap a six-game losing streak.
Samantha Fridley got things started for the Eagles with a one-out single in the second prior to Samantha Bird drawing a walk to put runners at first and second. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch before Jen Balcom drew a walk to load the bases. Kasey Anderson pushed in Fridley from third by drawing a bases-loaded walk and Burgess followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to build a 3-0 Bridgewater advantage. Freshman Lauren Jenkins pushed in the final run on an infield groundout to extend the lead to 4-0 after one and a half innings of play.
Bridgewater added an unearned run in the fourth when a Burgess single to shortstop sent home Fridley to put the Eagles out in front, 5-0.
Southern Virginia responded in the bottom of the frame with a run of its own. Cassandra Pacheco grounded out to first base to score Katie Evans from third, cutting the Bridgewater advantage to 5-1 after four innings of play.
After a scoreless fifth, Bridgewater added two runs in the sixth. An error on the Southern Virginia catcher allowed Bird to score from third prior to a Burgess lineout scoring Balcom to push the lead to 7-1. Bird later scored Brooke Throckmorton on a sacrifice fly to center field to finalize the scoring and hand Bridgewater an 8-1 win in the opener.
Burgess led the offense with a 2-for-4 game with four RBI. Jenkins and Fridley also tallied two hits for the Eagles to help lead a 10-hit attack.
Brianna Cox earned her 12th win of the season after allowing one run on four hits.
Jamie Pinkston picked up the loss for the Knights after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work and Evans led the offense with two hits.
Bridgewater opened game two where it left off the opener with a two-run top of the first. Jenkins ripped a single with two outs prior to Brea Hinegardner belting her eighth homer of the year to put the Eagles out in front, 2-0. Hinegarder's eight long balls is the highest total for a Bridgewater player since Emily Morris belted nine during her All-America campaign of 2010.
Southern Virginia (5-26) added its lone run in the nightcap when McKenzie Packard singled to score Evans, trimming the deficit in half a 2-1 score.
The Eagles added three runs in the second to take a sizeable 5-1 lead after two innings of play. Throckmorton singled down the line in right and moved to third on a Bird double. Balcom chased Thockmorton home on an infield single to put the Eagles up, 3-1. After Anderson reached on an error to load the bases, Burgess roped a single to right, scoring Bird in the process to send the Eagles out to a 4-1 advantage. Balcom later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-1.
In the third, Fridley led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch prior to Throckmorton reaching on a walk. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch before Bird drilled a homer to right center to blow the game open at an 8-1 Bridgewater lead.
Haley Harris then led off the fourth with a solo shot to finalize the scoring at a 9-1 tally.
Bird and Burgess each tallied two hits in the finale while Bird led the way with three RBI.
Harris secured the win in the circle after allowing just one run on four hits.
Four different Southern Virginia batters recorded a hit in the nightcap and Pinkston picked up the loss after allowing two runs over the opening three innings of play.
Bridgewater wraps up the regular season with a 20-17-1 overall record and now awaits the conclusion of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule to see if it reaches the conference tournament.
