BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College improved its overall record to 8-2 with a 9-0 victory Wednesday afternoon over Hollins University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's tennis action. The Eagles are now 5-1 in conference play.
The Eagles received a default at No. 3 doubles and the No. 2 duo of Marla O'Bryan and Jessie Mitchell took an 8-0 victory. At No. 1 doubles, Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins held off Victoria Coffee and Tiffany Hodges 8-6 to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Bridgewater won at No. 6 singles by default and won four of the other five singles matches in straight sets.
In an exciting matchup at No. 1 singles Gordon outlasted Coffee in split sets. Coffee won the opening set 6-2, but Gordon responded to even the match by taking the second set 6-4. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner and Gordon prevailed, 10-4.
Hawkins defeated Hodges 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and the Eagles won the remaining three matches without losing a game. Brittany Wilson at No. 3, Mitchell at No. 4 and Holly Knupp at No. 5 each picked up a victory.
Bridgewater returns to action Friday with a home conference match against Sweet Briar College.
