Eagles Cap Off Tournament with Split Decision

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The the Bridgewater College volleyball team closed its weekend with a defeat 3-2 defeat against Keene St. but fell 3-0 to the host Christopher Newport University.

The first match of the day saw the Eagles win their first set, 32-30. senior Megann Grimes came out strong in the first set, collecting four points with a block that ended in an attack error and three kills, all assisted by teammate Shannon Shellchock. 

The second set saw Keene St. ome out fighting as they scored five points in a row. After a brief time out, the Eagles built up their momentum as several attack errors committed by Keene State, along with kills by Abby Mills, Grimes, and Carleigh Studtmann gave Bridgewater a fighting chance. However Keene State would walk away with the second set win with a close score of 25-22.

Keene St.would win the third set by another close score of 25-23. The Eagles saw a total of 12 errors in the set to give leeway for the owls to snatch another set win but not before Bridgewater collected a few more points from Keene State's mistakes.

The last two sets saw Bridgewater's energy return as they won the fourth set, 25-19. The Eagles grabbed the lead by four points with Mills, Grimes, and Shellchock showing tremendous offensive power. Keene State's 10 errors for the match gave the Eagles the push they needed to win and ended the long match with a 15-12 fifth set finish.

Grimes had 15 kills for the match for a .235 attack percentage, while Shellchock collected a total of 43 assists. Freshman Courtney Thornburg had a great day in the librero position where she had a team-high 22 digs while Mills had 12 kills of her own.

Despite a strong performance against Keene State, Christopher Newport would come out solid and strong to win the final match of the tournament, 25-20, 25-12, and 25-19.

The scores remained close in the first set until Christopher Newport's Briana Sutton and Hannah Miller had consecutive kills with Abby McIntire serving an error and an ace to lead 14-18. Mills, Studtmann, Grimes and Sarah Temple would have the only kills of the set for Bridgewater.

The Captains opened the second set with a four point advantage before Mills and Shellchock added two kills to bring up the score. Bridgewater would then start a slow chase to decrease the gap, however the Eagles' six attacks to Christopher Newport's 20 would hand the Captains another win.

Once again the Eagles would remain at 13 points while Christopher Newport would gain a six point lead before the Eagles would respond with six more points. However the Captains took the final win with a final kill from Katelyn Newsome. Bridgewater fought a hard battle in the final set as Temple led the team with three kills while Rachel Kinsey added one and Studtmann added two of her own.

Bridgewater goes back on the road as the squad returns to action next weekend for the Johns Hopkins Tournament in Baltimore, Md. The first match begins Friday at 7 p.m.
