Averett Holds Off Eagles, 1-0, In Men's Soccer Action

Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett scored the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute Wednesday afternoon and the Cougars held on the rest of the way to defeat Bridgewater, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action.

The Eagles held an 8-6 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks in the opening half, but the Cougars went to the break with the lead on the strength of Nathan's Brown unassisted goal.

Bridgewater came out in the second half and immediately applied pressure to the Cougars defense as the Eagles fired off four shots and took three corners in the first five minutes of the second half.

Max Chacon put a shot on goal for the Eagles and the save by keeper Martin Erenstedt resulted in a corner for the Eagles. The Cougars were unable to clear the ball from their defensive end and another corner led to a shot from Adam Weisenborn that sailed high over the crossbar.

The Eagles kept the Cougars pinned at the defensive end and another corner-kick opportunity led to another shot from Weisenborn. His shot was blocked but Avery Walker controlled the rebound. Walker put another shot on goal, but Erenstedt was once again in position to make the save.

Averett played a man down for the final 10 minutes of the game and the Eagles once again put the Averett defense to the test. Bridgewater got off three more shots down the stretch, but the Eagles were unable to find the net as the Cougars escaped with the 1-0 victory.

Bridgewater finished the contest with a 19-11 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Eagles' goalkeeper Mark Davis recorded five saves while Erenstedt matched that number for Averett.

Bridgewater, now 0-5 to start the season, is back in action Saturday when it opens conference play with a home contest against Randolph-Macon College. Game time is 4 p.m.
