BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team wrapped up the second day of their home tournament, defeating N.C. Wesleyan College 3-1, before falling to Gallaudet University 3-0, in the nightcap.
In the first match of the day, Bridgewater would stay neck and neck with the Battling Bishops for most of the first set. The Bishops scored the first few points until kills from Carleigh Studtmann and Rachel Kinsey put Bridgewater on the board. The Eagles managed to stay one step ahead of the Bishops during the rest of the set until a final kill by Studtmann earned the team a 25-17 victory.
The Bishops turned the tables on the Eagles in the second set as they managed to come away with a large lead. Kinsey, Abby Mills, Sarah Temple and Jette Wade scored points on several kills but the Bishops capped off the set with a kill of their own to win, 25-14, and tie the match 1-1.
Despite the Bishops grabbing the first two points of the third set, Chelsea Owensby's served out five straight points to put the Eagles ahead, 5-2. Bridgewater kept up the pace as they ran away with the lead before Mills' final serve of the set ended in an attack error from the Battling Bishops to secure another 25-17 win.
Kinsey's kills on Studtmann's three serves put the Eagles on the board with an early lead over the Bishops in the final set. Like the previous sets, Bridgewater maintained the lead until the Bishops found a rhythm at the offensive end. Still, it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles capped off the final set with a 25-17 win and earned their first triumph of the tournament, 3-1.
Mills led the offense for the Eagles with 15 kills, while Kinsey and Grimes added seven apiece. Shannon Skellchock led the defense with 13 digs and also ran the offense, dishing out 30 assists.
The Bishops were led on offense by Aneisha Felton who tallied 13 kills. Christina Huber led the defense with 20 digs, while Ayla Brewer had 28 assists.
Gallaudet won the second match of the day 25-18, 25-17, 27-25.
The first set saw points between the teams bounce back and forth until the Bison pulled ahead to a 22-16 lead. Studtmann notched two kills to pull the Eagles closer with the Bison but it was eventually Gallaudet securing the 25-18 win on an attack error by Bridgewater.
Gallaudet grabbed an early lead in the second set and never looked back as it managed to stay ahead of the Eagles to clinch a 25-17 victory. However, the Eagles made sure Gallaudet was never out of sight as they kept the points close together in the third set.
A pair of kills by Studtmann and Temple gave Bridgewater a two-point lead before Skellchock added a service ace to keep the Eagles ahead 22-18. Gallaudet came from behind to tie the score at 23 all as the battle for the set win began. Bridgewater closed in as it led 25-24 but two attack errors later committed by the Eagles finished the set 27-25 and gave Gallaudet the 3-0 match win.
On the offensive side, the Eagles were led by Mills who notched nine kills, while Grimes chipped in eight. Skellchock led the defense once again with 12 digs and dished out 30 assists.
