BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior Rachael Loy netted a late second-half goal but it was too little, too late as the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team fell by a 3-2 tally to St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday afternoon at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
St. Mary's (4-3) controlled play in the opening frame as most of the first 35 minutes were spent in the Seahawks' attack zone. At the 34:11 mark of the first half, the Seahawks earned a penalty shot and Brady Wolf made it count as St. Mary's (Md.) ran out to a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Over the opening 35 minutes of play, the Seahawks owned a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 gap in corners but the Eagles turned the tide of the contest at the start of the second half.
Junior Taylor Prillaman needed just 63 seconds to net the equalizer, tying the game up at a goal each. Senior Caroline Augsburger dribbled through the arc and dumped a pass of to Prillaman and the junior's shot found the back of the net, tying the score at 1-1. The goal for Prillaman was her third of the year.
Bridgewater maintained the intensity at the offensive end and had an opportunity to take the lead early in the final frame. The Eagles earned a penalty stroke at the 40:50 mark of the contest, but Elizabeth Parker's shot was turned away by Seahawks netminder Christy Bishop to keep the game at a 1-1 deadlock.
St. Mary's regained the lead five minutes later on Edwards' first goal of the day. Wolf pushed a pass to Edwards and the forward put a shot into the back of the cage for a 2-1 Seahawks lead with 28:14 remaining in regulation.
Ten minutes later, St. Mary's (Md.) added another goal off of a long pass through the arc from Carly Todd which found the open stick of Edwards for a 3-1 Seahawks advantage.
Bridgewater (3-5) cut the deficit in half in the waning minutes of the second half when Prillaman fired a shot at Bishop and had it turned away. Sophomore Shannon Strosser controlled the rebound and dished the ball to an open Loy and the junior tallied the final goal of the game to make the score 3-2 with 1:58 remaining. The goal for Loy was her second in as many games.
St. Mary's (Md.) played keep-away for the final two minutes of the game to ride off with a 3-2 victory.
Prillaman led the Bridgewater offense with a goal on four shots.
Freshman Amanda Harper picked up the loss after making six saves.
The Seahawks were led offensively by Wolf's six-shot outing. Edwards added two goals on four shots as the visitors owned a 19-13 edge in shots and an 11-4 advantage in corners.
Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday evening against Roanoke College. Start time against the Maroons is set for 7 p.m.
