Eagles Soar Past Guilford in ODAC Match

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Guilford College, 3-1, in an away match Wednesday evening.

The Eagles fired off five points in the first set thanks to a pair of kills from Megan Lookabaugh. Megann Grimes added a kill of her own after Courtney Thornburg served an ace and Guilford committed an attack error. Bridgewater collected two more points before the Quakers finally landed on the scoreboard.

The Eagles increased the point gap on several errors committed by Guilford to take a 20-9 lead. Although the Quakers collected two more points, Bridgewater clinched the win on a final Guilford service error for a 25-12 victory.

In the second set, Bridgewater once again landed itself first on the scoreboard. However the Quakers would not let the Eagles out of their sight. With the Quakers closing in, Shannon Skellchock added a kill to keep the Eagles in the lead, but Guilford would bridge the gap to 16-16 on two Bridgewater errors. The Quakers soon took the lead and wouldn't let go, resulting in a 25-20 set win to tie the match, 1-1.

Both teams fought hard for an early lead in the third set. Abby Mills pulled out a pair of kills for the Eagles with Rachel Kinsey chipping in two to boost the lead to 8-7. Back-to-back kills from Grimes and two attack errors on Guilford pushed the Eagles further ahead to a 13-7 lead.

The Quakers attempted to level the score but a final kill from Lookabaugh sealed the 25-15 win for the Eagles.

Two kills from Grimes and three errors on Guilford would take the Eagles to a familiar five point lead in the fourth set. The Quakers put in a good effort to catch up, but the Eagles always managed to stay ahead. Thornburg  served up six points, including two service aces, for a 21-10 lead. Guilford gained a few more points on Bridgewater errors but its efforts weren't enough as a final kill from Kinsey locked down the 25-16 set victory and the 3-1 match win.

Grimes paced the Eagles with 13 kills and racked up three block solos and block assists. Lookabaugh added 12 kills for the Eagles. Thornburg led the defense with 15 digs and collected six service aces. Mills chipped in 12 digs while Chelsea Owensby added 11. Skellchock recorded 41 assists for the match.

The Quakers were led by Taylor Creed who had eight kills with Kelsey Rhueling and Michaela Wall adding seven apiece. Casey Davis led the defense with 10 digs with McKenzie Clapp and Rhueling adding eight each.

The Eagles are back in action as they head to Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa. for the Fall Fever Quad tournament. Bridgewater will face off against Frostburg St. Friday evening at 8 p.m. The Eagles continue on Saturday against Neumann College at 11 a.m., followed by Lebanon Valley at 2 p.m.
